EC to start voter helpline in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, Jan 22 (IANS): The Election Commission of India would be starting a voter helpline in Uttar Pradesh from Jan 25, also the voters' awareness day, officials said Wednesday.

The helpline would be started in all 75 districts to attend to the problems faced by the voters with regard to their photo identity cards, missing names in electoral rolls and other issues.

Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha told IANS the helpline numbers would be publicised enough so people can access these. He added that voters would get all handy information with regard to their voter ID cards, how to get registered as a voter, how to make a change in address, etc.

"This is yet another exercise of the Election Commission to reach out to the voters and increase their participation in the voting process," Sinha said.

He also said that senior Election Commission officials would visit various districts of the state to check on the preparedness of the district machineries ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Adding that efforts were being undertaken to ensure that the Lok Sabha polls become more and more voter friendly, Sinha said the Election Commission was committed to ensuring maximum participation of people in the democratic process of voting.
