New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS): Top Indian scientists and engineers will be engaging with their German counterparts to tweak strategically important manufacturing applications, including analysis of 'Big Data', later this week.

Fifty senior experts from Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and Germany's National Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) will be participating in a two-day workshop, beginning here Thursday.

'Big Data' has been defined as data sets that are far too large and complex to analyse, interpret or manipulate with standard methods or tools.

R. Chidambaram, principal scientific advisor to the government of India, will inaugurate the workshop, according to an INAE press release.

Baldev Raj, president, INAE, said: "The teams from INAE and Acatech will build a roadmap for new technologies that will help analyze 'Big Data' for engineering applications."

Efficient management of big data is critical to future industry which will rely on autonomous, self-regulating, knowledge-based and sensor-supported production and logistics systems, the release said.

The first three industrial revolutions were a result of mechanisation, electricity and Information Technology, while the 'Internet of Things and Services' is ushering in a fourth, known simply as Industry 4.0.

German know-how in embedded systems and automation engineering will enable it to tap into Industry 4.0, which will boost smart manufacturing.

INAE, founded in 1987, is an apex body of Indian engineering and science which promotes technology and its application in India.

Fritz Klocke, Otthein Herzog and Rilo Sielaff, all professors, from RWTH Aachen, University of Bremen and Technical University, Darmstadt in Germany, respectively, will be attending the workshop.

German scientists will interact with their Indian counterparts from the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institutes of Technology, besides Bharat Forge, GE, Matric Vision, Mahindra & Mahindra, Samsung and SAP.
