New police official to probe assault on Ugandan women

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS): A new police official will investigate the assault on four Ugandan women allegedly by Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti, police said.

"A woman sub-inspector would investigate the assault on four Ugandan women allegedly by Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti and the AAP supporters," a police official told IANS.

Four Ugandan women, who were allegedly victimised by Bharti and supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on the night of Jan 16, recorded their statement before the magistrate Tuesday.

Due to a protest led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues, demanding the suspension of some police officials for their alleged inaction in busting a "prostitution and drug racket" and in a dowry case, the station house officer (SHO) of the Malviya Nagar police station has been sent on leave.

Following this, the probe has been transferred to the Mehrauli police, the official said.
