Mangalore, May 16: Mangalore and Manipal will become Karnataka's foremost centers for the United States Medical Learning Examination (USMLE).

Manipal Universal Learning Private Limited, a corporate body of the Manipal group, has launched the centers on the Mangalore and Manipal campuses of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

With more and more Indian as well as NRI students aspiring for keeping abreast with the latest developments in the medical field in the United States, these courses have become an important addition to medical degrees.

The new programme was aimed at equipping Indian doctors to take up medical service in the US. The course will help medical students to appear for various examinations they are required to be pass before they are taken into medical services or get work permit in a particular hospital.

Sources in the Kasturba Medical College said the standards laid down by the US had to be studied and worked on by Indian medical experts before they take up the examinations in that country. Manipal Universal Learning Private Limited had highly trained faculty for imparting training and education needed to pass the examinations in the US.

The emphasis of the course was on personalised learning and enhancing learning outcomes of the individual. The three-month course in USMLE would cost Rs. 50,000, the sources said.

With these centers becoming operational, the region is likely to become a centre of educational tourism. Manipal, which is a well-known centre for education and research programmes, will run the USMLE with specialists trained in the US and Indian experts, the sources added.
