Woman gang-raped on community panchayat orders

Kolkata, Jan 23 (Agencies): A 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by at least a dozen men in West Bengal's Birbhum district on the orders of a medieval-style village community panchayat that decided to punish her for her relationship with a man from a different community.

The young woman, who is in hospital in a critical state, reportedly told the police that she was gang-raped through the night, so many times that she lost count, by neighbours she knew as uncles and 'dadas' (brother). 13 people named by her have been arrested.

The incident took place on Monday at a village called Subalpur in Birbhum, after villagers saw the woman's friend at her house. The headman and a few others immediately called a "court" and demanded 25,000 each from the woman and the man as 'jorimana' or fine.

When the woman's family said they couldn't pay, the headman allegedly ordered the gang-rape. She was taken away and sent home the next day, after the assault, she told the police. Her friend's brother had reportedly paid the "fine" and taken him away.

The woman's family sneaked out of the village on Wednesday to file a First Information Report or FIR and take her to a hospital.

The incident, in President Pranab Mukherjee's home district, comes at a time when the state's Trinamool Congress government is facing anger over the death of a teenager who was gang-raped twice by the same group of men and set on fire by men known to the rapists, in Madhyamgram, a district just an hour from Kolkata.

Trinamool MP Derek O' Brien tweeted this morning, "Awoke to terrible news of a young tribal girl gang-raped on Khap orders in Birbhum.10 'beasts' swiftly rounded up.Social malaise; must change."

Four years ago, a teenaged tribal girl was paraded naked on the orders of a similar medieval-style village court in the same district, Birbhum, for her alleged affair with a boy from a different community, sparking a massive outrage in the state.

Talibani Panchayat: Again, one more gang rape is happened in India, that is done by authority figures or they instigated others to do it! These people are so rude, shameless, insensitive and fearless against even young women.
A 20 years old woman is gang raped in West Bengal by the barbaric Taliban Panchayat. I did not know whether Panchayat is made it to teach a young woman like this or they want to show their cruel power to the entire Womens’ society? They do not have any wok, sense or what? If they do not know how to run panchayat then what should government do and what steps the government must take against all these cruel and insensitive things? These Panchayat must abide by Indian constitutional rules and prescribed social norms. Otherwise, there are no needs of any village Panchayat or block Panchayat in India. They do not have any sense and respect for themselves and do not care about country’s status in the international arena. It shows India is going back toward medieval dark age, where women were treated like playing or non-living objects.

I think it's wrong to give this incident any religious colour...

This decision of Panchayath(kangaroo Court) is ridiculous, outrageous and condemnable ...this happened a few years ago in Pakistan also called "Mukhara Mai" incident...

I have no idea why we should condemn a religion here without any reason...

There are many people here in this forum who are waiting for bad incidents to happen so they could stick it on some religion or parties...

Juliet, you must do some research before using the broad brush to paint an entire culture/religion. 20% or 1 in 5 women in US claim they have been raped at some point of time in their lives ( wiki it, or look at today's 'Hindustan Times'). The disturbing trend of "honor killings" in muslim communities across the world, including muslims in US,UK and Canada has been on the rise. And before we absolve Christianity, let’s not forget the abuses of children by some priests that compelled UN to talk to the Vatican.

We, in India, can need to change our attitude about women, and understand that women are not commodities. Bollywood age old "man luring woman" by singing and harassing her formula has given many young men in our society a wrong idea harassing women is acceptable. And then there is the problem with law enforcement who have no clue about forensics, or how to get a conviction based on DNA evidence and not rely on “witnesses” !

    Juliet Mascarenhas Bejai,

The act of any injustice towards woman is not accepted in any religion. Not yours nor mine.No religious teaching advocated it. Even in this kind of horrible, inhuman act you thought of criticizing an entire religion "Hinduism". I don't understand your narrow mentality, its not a religion that has done such an act, but individuals/humans they can be of any religion.

What do you say about the Nun who got pregnant recently - was she not a follower of Christianity?!! So do you blame the entire religion or just an individual.

Its people like you who narrow down the society on the basis of religion.

    Grow up ...

we boast ourselves we are Indians,we are Hindus. We speak on our culture, Tradition blah blah.We deliver hatred speeches, for all the misdeeds in the community we blame the British, the Italians for injecting their culture.
Is this not a shameful act even in the 21st century,we behave like beasts towards our own sisters. We call ourselves educated and rich in our culture. This type of punishment is this written and preached in vedas, puranas, upanishads, and various other holy books.
Then why are we doing this? Where is our samaj? Our brotherhood? Our respect and protection for women?
    Who is dividing us?
Common people.Rise.Be positive and change yourselves in thoughts, words and deeds.Remove all evils in the society and build a greater nation.

Every commentator has poured out their anger by saying 'hang them, chop them, bundle them, cut them', but who will do it my dear Indian brothers and sisters ? Looks like Indian criminal politicians are worst mafia. India will never progress unless criminals are restricted from contesting in the election and the words such as religion, caste, creed, reservations etc. be fully prohibited in India. The ruling and opposition party will never allow to exist any party which tries to bring changes in corrupt and political system. It is clearly evident from the way how AAP has been trapped and suppressed in very crooked ways. God only can save the common people of India from jungle raaj. Jai Hind.

What else one can expect in a Banana Republic like India? Whether it is a village, tribal belt or a metro city, women are treated worse than animals! Unless death sentence is given to rapists, these things will go on without any fear!
