Populist anarchy cannot substitute governance: President

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI): President Pranab Mukherjee today made a veiled attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's street protests saying government is not a "charity shop" and "populist anarchy" cannot be a substitute for governance.

Without taking the name of AAP leader, who earlier this week staged a two-day dharna outside Rail Bhawan against the Central government, he was critical of Kejriwal's style when he said "elections do not give any person the license to flirt with illusions".

Addressing the nation on the eve of 65th Republic Day, the President said corruption was a cancer that eroded the democracy and weakened the foundation of the state.

If Indians were enraged, he said, it was because they were witnessing corruption and waste of national resources. If governments do not remove these flaws, voters will remove governments.

"Equally dangerous is the rise of hypocrisy in public life. Elections do not give any person the license to flirt with illusions. Those who seek the trust of voters must promise only what is possible.

"Government is not a charity shop. Populist anarchy cannot be a substitute for governance. False promises lead to disillusionment, which gives birth to rage, and that rage has one legitimate target: those in power," he said.

Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues had staged a dharna outside Rail Bhawan defying prohibitory orders demanding action against some policemen. They ended it after two policemen were sent on leave.

The President said the rage will abate only when governments deliver what they were elected to deliver: social and economic progress, not at a snail's pace but with the speed of a racehorse.

The aspirational young Indian, he said, will not forgive a betray of her future. Those in office must eliminate the trust deficit between them and the people. Those in politics should understand that every election comes with a warning sign: perform or perish.

I absolutely agree with Mr. Peter. If the President of India, during his tenure as a congressman had practiced what he preaches today, there would not have been the birth of the new party called AAP. It seems he too is worried about Kejriwal, if his name pops out from some scam if AAP comes to power.

Mr. President, you are good in giving lectures. Every party talks against corruption and waste of national resources. What you and your party did to stop this Mr. President ? Who is supposed to stop this boss ? Do you think Indians are fools and give lectures as if your party is pure and not involved in corruption and looting of national resources ? You taunt against Mr. Kajriwal. If he doesn't get down to the street, show/suggest a way by which termites of corruption be brought to book. Do you suggest him to join hands with your party and enjoy looting and fool innocent citizens of India who are fed up with your governance and desperately searching for a change ? Where were you Mr. President when there were rampant rape and murders in the capital and India's name has been polluted under your lazy, careless and irresponsible governance ? We need a change in Indian Politics Mr. President, whether it is by protests, anarchy or by hook or crook, if common men benefits out of it and dirty politicians are nailed down for their evil acts. Jai ho AAP and Jai ho Mr. Kajeriwal. Wish a very happy Republic day to all my Indian brothers and sisters. Jai Hind.

It seems that people who are residing out of India and settled there for good or temporary, they only speak politics. When I go to my native people hardly speak politics and they concerned with their life. Even of senior leader comes, nobody follow him/her. First, people should know what is corruption?. By taking money and accumulating wealth, not only corrupts, there so many factors amount to corruption. First is dishonesty. In our own community there are dishonest people I have found in my life,to that effect I have documentary proof. When I spoke to our community people, they do not open mouth because they do not want to become enemy of them. I would have given an entire report in this web site, DW will not publish it.

Call it: anarchy/andolan/revolution / kranthi/but STOP Looting the public.
What did you do while in power?
    to stop looting the nation.
AAP evolved due to the suppressed sentiments and daylight Loot happening from top to bottom.
Work hard to merit, earn your bread like TATAS-L&T/WIPRO/INFOSYS ETC.
WORK AND MAKE NOT EASY MONEY-LOOT- MAKE LAW FOR OTHERS.
    and now call anarchy?
Why did NAXALAS AND Maos take birth- because eteh zamindars - killed the poor -looted them -raped and abused them threw them out of their lands and sold the land for exorbitant value.
so , what do you have to say?
AAP was born due to challenge of digvijay .
aan just wanted the JANLOK PAL Bill to pass which simply dragged its feet sine so many years till now.
If the janlok pal bill was passed due time all this would not take place.
Even now it is not late -so dont sleep -make it happen-Indian janatha -the masses need results-
Clean and transparent-efficient and competent govt.-leadership.
not 2G-COAL- DEFENCE -ADASRH- to name a few..
    Practice what you preach..
The law is for all.and no one is above the law.
All high handedness ha to go.. be humble and nbe simple -thin of the nation first .. Think of its people first .Lectures are ok ..But let us practice ..

Unnecessarily everyone is using the word 'Anarchy', just to undermine the rising popularity of AAP.
It is deplorable that even the President of India himself is using this word even though he himself was part of Corrupt congress govt earlier. During Narasimha Rao govt same Pranab Mukerji favored Ambani group by flaunting all rules and at that time he never thought that corruption will give birth to Anarchy.

    Dear Respected President Sir,
I am totally confused with you call that Populist anarchy cannot substitute Goverance, may I ask you one simple question:
if that is the case why you have taken support and help from the Shiv Sena Party which was involved in so much of anarchy which included open challenges to govt and Indian constitution and that the chief of party openly accepted that he has commanded to demolition of the National Monument of Babri Masjid and attacks on North Indians and South Indians !!! You never spoke against this party and their anarchy while you were sitting in Congress govt and taking their help of President election ?
And now all of sudden AAP reminded you populist anarchy?
President Sir, You are president of our Democretic nation, no need to take the dectated speech from any party.
We still have faith in you, trust in you and we respect you, We love you to uphold our constitution.
    Long Live our democracy.

President' s speech if it is written and read, he know what he is doing. He was the best candidate for PM, but he was not mass leader, hence congress will the PM who is loyal to them, if there is no candidate from their family. Pranab Mukherjee is capable to handle any ministry and now he is aging therefore he ed present post. He may be from congress, but when the official work comes he never compromise.

Pranab can do very little by raising his voice against corruption now . He is president now . He can express his views by speeches during government functions probably. He had a nice opportunity when he was part of congress to raise his concerns against sky-high corruption that time. He had a very senior position there too . Did he anytime raise his concerns there against corruption? . This should be clarified first.Comment against AAP was indeed valid remark . AAP is good prospect of the country and must grow, but they cannot break the law so bluntly . AAP image has dented due to recent Dharna. However, we must support AAP as they are the only hope against the common man

Pranab Mukerji Sir, you are a man with independent views unlike the earlier rubber stamp president like Pratibha Patil. So, at least on this Republic Day you could have given your own speech instead of reading out whatever speech written by Congress Party spokesmen.
This is not the occasion to indirectly drag the performance of AAP party in your speech and make political minded speech instead of being neutral. You should have talked only about national issues instead of talking about petty party politics.

These are changing times...When times change, things seem intolerable and not correct...But in a long fight against public corruption these are just the beginning...Only public can tolerate a bit of this to carry forward the near Olympic torch of voice against the rampant menace...
When a child cries mother often understands why...But politics is full of step mothers who do not want to hear any cries...

The president himself is not democratic as he is dancing to the tune of his master. He should not forget congress used him before becoming president. All parties are scared of AAP as it advocates real people power. The so called president should not forget agitation is not anarchy and people power is not populism.

President is right only if the elected government act responsibly to provide the basic needs like food, shelter, clothing, water, light-lamps, basic education ... to each and every citizen at affordable price or free of any charges. An accepted factor of democracy is "... government by (of) the people, for the people..." so that all citizens minimum living requirements are met.

Wonderful and thunder-full speech from a responsible person, his Excellency President of India Pranab-da.

I am applauding by standing and by sitting also.

Citizens are soaked in selfishness and corruption.

A very minute percentage of the population may be living without corruption and selfishness.

    May God Bless India.

"Government is not a charity shop, " says Pranab, ex Congress babu. How come then Congress is creating minority shops and quota banks to govern a country giving charity to these groups.
He is contradicting his own political creation. Its a shame president of India does not see this phenomenon before commenting on AAP.

For once i agree with our President. Most people in India don't know/don't care about history and geopolitics. In the early 2000s, there were CIA sponsored "Color revolutions" across countries that were once a part of USSR. One such fire is still burning in Ukraine. Again from 2009 onwards there were populist revolutions in arab countries that were sponsored through US dept of state and CIA, and conducted instigated through Facebook and Twitter. Those so called revolutions have destroyed Egypt, Libya,Syria and Tunisia.

AAP reeks on such a revolution that stands against the basic tenets of democracy. AAP leaders are on the record saying they are pro Kashmir separation. They want the army to be out of J&K. They have promised people free stuff without realizing where the funds will come from. And worse of all, they have threatened to disturb India's republic day celebrations, and we, the people, are tolerating this in the name of "revolution"!
