Mangalore, May 18: The proposed amendment to section 20 of the 'People's Representation Act 1950' met opposition from the Election Watch Dog Committee on Wednesday May 17, at a press conference held here.
The amendment provides voting rights to non-resident Indians. Committee co-convener Dinesh Pai, who addressed the conference, said that giving voting rights to NRIs will mean that they will have the right to contest for elections also. Since most NRIs are financially secure, they may indulge in buying seats and posts, he said.
The bill for amending the act has already been introduced in the Rajya Sabha. Calling for a nation-wide debate on the introduction of the bill, Pai informed that any objection to the bill may be sent to R B Gupta, Deputy Secretary, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Room no 005, ground floor, Parliament house, New Delhi - 110001.
Harish Someshwar, Diwakar and others were present at the conference.
