Three transgenders get government jobs in Pakistan


Islamabad, Jan 31 (IANS): Three transgenders have got government jobs in Pakistan's Karachi city, a media report said Friday.

Rifty Khan, Muskaan and Anjum were given their appointment letters Thursday by the Sindh government, Dawn reported.

Riffy Khan holds a masters degree, while Muskaan and Anjum are matriculates.

The report quoted Rubina Qaim Khani, the provincial minister for social welfare, women development and special education, as saying that this was the preliminary phase and other transgenders would also soon be given jobs.

"I'm very happy that the government, while regarding us as respectable citizens of the society, has provided us with jobs," Riffy Khan was quoted as saying.

The daily's report termed this "a significant development for a much mistreated community in Pakistan".
