Differently abled demand passage of Disability Rights Bill

New Delhi, Feb 5 (IANS): Members of the differently abled community staged a protest here Wednesday demanding the passage of the Disability Rights Bill along with the suggested amendments in the ongoing session of parliament.

"We want the bill to be tabled in parliament as soon as possible and then be passed. If the bill does not clear now, then it will be put in cold storage for almost two years," said Javed Abidi, convenor of the Disability Rights Group (DSG).

The group also wants the amendments suggested by them to be incorporated in the bill.

"The present bill includes only seven types of disability while there are many other types of disabilities such as dyslexia and haemophilia which need to be incorporated in the bill," added Abidi.

The members of the community have been protesting and lobbying to get the bills passed. There are about 70 million differently abled citizens in India.
