Syrian troops recapture key town

Damascus, March 8 (IANS): Syrian troops have fully recaptured a key town in the country's central province of Homs, the Syrian army said Saturday.

The army wrested back control over the town of Zara at the western edge of Homs, Xinhua reported.

The town is strategically important for its location near the borders with Lebanon, making it one of the main smuggling routes for the rebels.

The Syrian army's victory is the latest in a series of other successful operations, mainly in the northern countryside of the capital Damascus.

Syria's three-year-old crisis has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people and displaced millions of others, according to UN tallies.
