2008 Kandhamal nun gangrape case: 3 people convicted, 6 acquitted

Bhubaneswar, Mar 14 (IBN): The district court in Cuttack on Friday convicted three persons and acquitted six in the 2008 Kandhamal nun gangrape case. The nun was allegedly gangraped on August 25, 2008 at Baliguda in Kandhamal district of Odisha, two days after the communal riots broke out in the district following the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati and four of his supporters.

While ten people were accused in the case, nine were arrested and one is still absconding. Eight of the nine people arrested were out on bail while one Mitu Patnaik is still lodged in Choudwar jail.

The case had been transferred to the district and sessions judge court, Cuttack, in 2010 on directions of the Odisha High Court after the alleged survivor had expressed apprehensions over fair trial and threat to her life if it was held in Kandhamal. A total of 29 witnesses from the prosecution side were cross examined in the court.

The court conducted cross examination and deposition of witnesses in 12 phases.

    Anytime, if the priest or Nun on their religious cloth and people harm them intentionally will be cursed till their death as well as their families, generations. I have seen such a curse in my life time group of boys raised hands on the priest. Most of them died with various ways at their early thirties either hanging, burning, road accidents, and one is mentally off in the mental hospital. This is a factual story and same will happened to those in Kandhamal as time comes. Nun will be crying from her heart, mind and soul for such incidence which is very sad, unforgettable, unforgivable, but our court system has its own ways of doing things politically. God knows what is good for all of us and it will work per his plan but people donot forget to pray for our beloved nun to come out from such difficult moments of her life.

    Mr Henry . Any person born in India are Indian's. It doesn't matter who is the victim and what is her religion or country . Non of the religion permits to rape . Hang the rapists . No mercy for rapist and child molester's. We have to get together and fight for the right's of this Nun. All the religion's told the men to protect the women's . SIMPLE, THIS CASE SHOULD MOVE TO FAST COURT AND PLS GOVERNMENT CAN YOU PUSH THIS FAST COURT LITTLE MORE FAST.PLEASE DUE TO MINISTER'S ARE BUSY IN THEIR ELECTION SEAT'S

    There is no protest from women's rights organizations in this case, I think they are are also belong to the BJP. 2008 to 2014 great....still they have given bail... I think this a drama during election to show that they are arrested..

    In Marad, Kerala 9 Hindu fishermen were killed by some extremists and still no action been taken by your secular govt.

    Mr.Avinash, Do not indirectly justify any crime, by comparing it to some other incident. Be it Congress or BJP/RSS, it is a crime. Condemn it. Secondly, the atrocities committed in Khandamal against Christians by BJP/RSS are beyond imagination.

    They too are responsible.
    But we SEE WHO ARE THE RIOTERS? They are REAL CULPRITS! They will never go unpunished by God.

    A disappointing and a sad news...we cried and shouted at the government when Abhaya was raped and judgement was given within a year where as this nun was raped 2008 yet the case to be perceived. Money and power can protect the victims here, whereas in Delhi the rapesit are poor they cannot afford money or power to protect themselves. Poor are hanged, rich and powerful are honoured. Where we are heading towards....is left to your imagination....today, you can shut your mouth and keep quiet but when these powerful and rich people reach your doorstep....awake from the slumber...
