Srinagar, March 15 (IANS): Curfew has been imposed in Kashmir's Bandipora district, where tensions escalated Saturday amid the death of a youth in police firing a day before.

Farhat Ahmad Dar was killed in Naidkhai area of Bandipora in north Kashmir when a violent mob attacked a security force camp in the area.

When a police vehicle was chasing away the mob, irate protestors tried to torch the vehicle.

Policemen inside the vehicle reportedly fired at the mob, critically injuring the youth.

Police said the youth was immediately shifted for treatment to Pattan town in Baramulla district, but he succumbed to injuries en route.

District Magistrate Bandipora ordered a probe and police have also registered an FIR into the incident.

Authorities in Bandipora district declared curfew in Naidkhai, Hajin, Sumbal, Bandipora and some other areas of the district Saturday morning to maintain law and order.

In summer capital Srinagar, traffic and pedestrian movement are not allowed by large contingents of police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in old city areas.

Although, deployments of police and the CRPF in full riot gear has been made in the civil lines areas of Srinagar city, no restrictions have been imposed in these areas on pedestrian or vehicular movement.

Shops, public transport and other businesses remained closed in Srinagar city Saturday and the authorities of the Kashmir University announced postponement of all post graduate level entrance and other exams.

Police said the situation is under control throughout the Valley and no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere so far.
