Mangalore, Mar 20: A 35 year old man hailing from Kerala who allegedly tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a coconut chopper got a new lease of life, all thanks to the life saving surgery performed by the very able surgical team of Father Muller Medical College Hospital comprising of ENT surgeons, Dr Vinay V Rao, Dr Anita Aramani and anesthetist Dr Mohammed Imdad.

His attempt to suicide led to 9X11 cm long wound on the anterior part of his neck with his food pipe and wind pipe being transacted and with the voice box being displaced anteriorly.  He was immediately resuscitated and airway was secured in emergency department.

The patient was brought to hospital 6 hours after the incident because of which he had lost significant amount of blood; he was shifted to the operation theater immediately. The wound was assessed and the food pipe and wind pipes were closed under general anesthesia. Tubes were introduced in the food pipe and windpipe to facilitate entry of food in stomach and air to lungs respectively.

Post operatively, fluids and electrolytes were monitored under the guidance of Dr Arunachalam and his team of physicians.  Tubes from windpipe and food pipe were removed after a period of 10 days and the patient was able to swallow and breathe comfortably on his own. Psychiatric evaluation and monitoring was continued during his hospital stay. This has helped the patient recuperate both mentally and physically. He was discharged two weeks after the surgery with good general condition.
