Myanmar president commits to democratic transition

Yangon, March 26 (IANS): Myanmar President U Thein Sein Wednesday pledged in parliament that his government will go ahead with the transition to democracy without return.

U Thein Sein made the pledge in parliament in Nay Pyi Taw on the occasion of the third anniversary of his government's taking office saying that achievements have been made to some extent in the democratic transition from the military government to a civilian government, Xinhua reported.

It has come to a crucial time, he said, calling for valuing the transition and efforts to maintain the already-achieved peace, stability and development in the country.

Disagreeing with international suspicion that his government might possibly make a U-turn from the way to democracy, U Thein Sein said his government never deviated from the way, and pledged to walk till destination was reached.
