Mangalore, Jun 12:
The true progress of the city lies in addressing the needs and grievances of the common people, said Veerendra Heggade at the Sadhana Samavesha organised to hand over the responsibility of monitoring 781 SHGs to Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) at AB Shetty Memorial Hall here on Sunday June 11.

He further said that during a survey conducted by SKDRDP, it was found that social evils were more rampant in the urban areas than in the rural ones. He lauded the efforts of the SHGs in Beltangady and Karkala taluks in saving over Rs 6 crore.

The SHGs were formed under Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation and SKDRDP over a span of 44 months from September 2002 to May 2006. The SKDRDP was requested to take charge of them as MCC was unable to take the responsibility.

Veerendra Heggade was felicitated on the occasion. The programme was presided over by mayor K Ashraf. SKDRDP Women's SHG's president Hemavati V Heggade, MLA N Yogish Bhat, J Krishna Palemar, deputy mayor Indira and KUIDFC deputy director J R Lobo were present.
