Narendra Modi's opponent, caught tearing his posters, arrested

Vadodara, Apr 3 (NDTV): Madhusudhan Mistry, who is running against Narendra Modi in Vadodara, has been arrested after he was filmed ripping down posters of the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. Mistry, a Congressman, tried to replace Modi's advertisements with his own, with help from supporters. He has been booked for damage to public property.

After reviewing footage from news channels, the local police has filed a case of vandalism against Mistry, 69, who is a General Secretary of the Congress and is considered to be close to the party's young vice-president, Rahul Gandhi.

The BJP has put over a thousand hoardings of Modi across the city. The party had booked all major advertisement kiosks and billboards in Vadodara more than a fortnight ago. Mistry, after being named as Modi's challenger from Vadodara, demanded an equal share in the space allocated for putting up election-related posters. The municipal corporation refused, arguing that these locations have already been allotted to the BJP.

Mistry told NDTV today that police and district officials were giving the BJP unfair and blatantly preferential treatment.

Modi is running for Parliament from Vadodara in Gujarat and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. This is his first national election; he is currently a member of the Gujarat state legislature.

The Congress has yet to announce who will run against the 64-year-old BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh.

Under Modi, the BJP is expected to deliver one of its strongest performances ever. Opinion polls say though it will get the maximum seats, it will fall short of a majority.

Mistry, 69, is a Member of Parliament. He is a General Secretary of the Congress and is considered to be close to the party's young vice-president, Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the campaign for the national election. He is in-charge of the party's affairs in Uttar Pradesh.

I dont see anything wrong in Modiji. I hate congress government. What shit have these people do to the nation? If someone has a ready proof of administration and good works why cant we accept it. I had been to Gujrath and saw a real growth. Instead of dividing India in the name of religion (reservations) why don't you create job opportunities, better infrastructure and any growth related activities? Why are you so busy in deciding which minority gets how much? Where were you for the past ten years? Why is the love towards minority growing so widely? Are you guys able to tackle any given job without taking the word minority?

When Baroda City is covered every inch with Modi's posters, where other candidates should paste their Posters ? Naturally to make some space for their own Poster they have to tear some Poster.
Actually EC should put restriction on the Number of Posters one candidate can paste in each locality so that all candidates will get equal space to paste their posters.

Mistry is fully aware of the consequences of his actions and tearing down the posters was possibly a deliberate action on his part as reported by a TV news channel. This could have been done to bring to light the unfairness of the police and district officials of Vadodara in giving preferential treatment to the BJP as alleged by Mistry.
In doing so Mistry is highlighting that in Gujarat it is virtually a dictatorship.

Mistrybhai be careful while in Gujarat. Have you not heard of fake encounters ?

Modi must be really a rich man. Almost since last one year, there are posters, banners, buntings everywhere around, added with it commercials in TV. Maybe they could be spending 1crore everyday simply on promoting him, as TV commercials are very expensive. In comparison, the congress advt's are very very less, as they were in power and always been accused of scams. When it comes to Modi's gujrarat, looks like every govt. servant is wearing a modi mask, to save themselves or else, at least they would have been fair to other party candidates. Mistry seems to make it a point to highlight, because, the media only focus on dramatic action. They won't get even a minute otherwise on TV screens.
