Panaji, Jun 18: The Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs), displaced by the demolition in Baina red light area in Vasco, 40 kms from here, have demanded
rehabilitation in place of compensation from the Goa government.

"Nearly 1,000 CSWs were affected due to the demolition. The state government should rehabilitate them properly and only providing money will not solve the problem,” said social activist Tara Kerkar who is spearheading the agitation by Baina CSWs.

"The state government is shirking its responsibility. According to the government there are less than 500 cases before them,” Kerkar said.

Following the High Court orders, 250 cubicles in Baina red light area in port town of Vasco were demolished by the state government, two years back.

"The special Committee of Goa State Women's Commission is scrutinizing the applications of affected people and later on the compensation would be paid," District Collector, J B Singh said. He further added that 300 applications are under consideration.

On the CSWs' demand for rehabilitation, Singh said simultaneously their rehabilitation would also be worked out by the state government.
