Mangalore, May 7: Out of a group of students from National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), who reached a beach near Suratkal on the evening of Tuesday May 6, one lost his life after drowning in Arabian Sea. His name has been given as Shashankt Srivatsava (23) from Bangalore. He was a final year civil engineering (B Tech) student of the college.
Other students, who also faced danger to their lives, were rescued. They were treated in a hospital.
Ten final year students, who had completed their annual examinations, and were preparing to return to their native places, had planned to spend time together at the beach and celebrate the occasion, as their last examination was on Tuesday. Shashank, Kuru Yadav, and Nikhil were also in the group which reached NITK Beach. These three students were dragged into the sea by a huge wave when they were playing in water. The other students succeeded in saving Kuru and Nikhil. Both of them are out of danger.
It is learnt that after having been washed to a considerable distance, Shashankt had tried to save himself by holding on to the nets spread by local fishermen, but failed. The locals, who saw the student getting drowned at sea, contacted life guards from Panambur. By the time they covered seven km distance to the beach, and local divers swung into action, Shashank had lost his life.
The spot where Shashankt died is said to be deadly, with two youngsters from Kulai having lost their lives here two months ago. Demand for life guards at this spot has not been met, the locals rued.
The Suratkal police and officials of NITK representatives visited the spot. A case was registered in Suratkal police station.
