- 10 Kannada textbooks published by Prasaranga released
Mangalore, Jun 28: Students should be encouraged to read textbooks instead of guides. Guides might help them score more in an examination but by preventing students from thinking, they stunted their growth in life, said K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University.
He was speaking after releasing 10 Kannada textbooks published by Prasaranga of Mangalore University at a function here on Tuesday. He said the Government's plan to introduce Kannada books across universities was opposed as it would discourage regional writers.
The proposal was rejected at the Inter-University Board meeting sometime ago, Mr. Kaveriappa said.
To make books available to students at a fair price, Prasaranga had decided to publish them, he added.
K. Chinappa Gowda, chairman, Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Kannada, Mangalore University, said the works of 78 writers had been included in the books. The works of 19 writers from the region (Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu) and those of 11 women writers had also been included.
A discussion on the semester system and learning Kannada was held after the release function.
Abhay Kumar, director, Prasaranga, welcomed the gathering. Gananath Hegde, president, Vikasa, proposed a vote of thanks.
