Mangalore: Graduation day and 'Utsav' held at BIT

Mangalore, May 12: Bearys Institute of Technology, Innoli, Mangalore, celebrated the second graduation day of its final year batch of 2014 at its campus on Saturday May 10. Students of five branches of engineering, dressed in their best formal attire marched in a procession to the function where they were felicitated with an annual memoir and memento. These were  was presented by the management of the Bearys group. 

Ramesh Phatak, the vice president, Global Technology Center, Schneider Electric India was the chief guest and professor Balaveera Reddy, former vice chancellor of VTU, was the guest of honour. The function was presided over by the chairman of Bearys Group Syed Mohammed Beary.


The director of campus, Dr Sainath welcomed the guests, parents and students and spoke about the crucial phase of young students' life where they would be transiting from being mere teenagers to responsible young adults. He advised them that there was a loftier aim in life than to merely become successful and that was to be of some help to those who were less privileged. 

Principal, Dr S A Khan then read out the college report in which he highlighted the achievements of various departments in terms of academics and research. He pointed out the significant contributions to Indian Science and Technology made by a few departments and individuals from departments of Mechanical, Civil and Physics.

In his address to the students, Phatak pointed out that technology was changing rapidly and every generation had to adapt to a new level of advancement in science and technology. He pointed out that formal education only gave them the tool, how they plan to use it to face life’s challenges is up to them. They would therefore have to learn to be good human beings.

Professor Balaveera Reddy spoke to the students and advised them that in life there is nothing like out-of-syllabus, students have to be ready for anything and everything. He spoke that we are living in the era of JIT technologies (Just in time technologies), where every technology seeks to cut time. He coined a new word ‘cooptation’ by combining two words competition and cooperation. He said that for students to achieve success in this competitive JIT technology era, they must rely on cooperation.

 The senior advisor professor Raikar spoke to the students and told them that truth is everything. He said that where there is truth, success and wealth automatically followed. He used illustrative parables and incidents from the life of famous personalities like Sir C V Raman to highlight the importance of honesty in one’s life. He then advised the students that they needed to be truthful to their conscience without which they would be unable to achieve anything significant in life.

Syed Mohammed Beary spoke and placed the fact before the students that it was a really sad plight to see that a country of 1.5 billion people did not have single academic institution in the top 200 of the world. He mentioned that while we had institutions of international caliber like the Nalanda and Takshashila Universities in the past, we could not nurture them and protect our culture and tradition of education. He advised the students that it was more important for them to have values than aim for mere success.

Prizes were given away to students who excelled in their academics. Keeping with the tradition of encouraging students to have an all round personality, the institute also awarded ‘The Star of BIT’ award to one student. The award was won by Shahid of IV year department of CSE. Nishanth from the IV year Mechanical Engineering was recognized for his helpful and inspiring nature.

BIT then felicitated the parents of students who had come from the overseas to pursue their studies here. The parents expressed their happiness with the fact that they had left behind young students and were now taking back with them professional engineers. Elisandra from Angola and George from Mozambique spoke on the occasion and said that they enjoyed every moment of their stay and were carrying back happy memories with them.
Syed Mohammed Beary then felicitated the chief guest Ramesh Phatak and the guest of honour professor Balaveera Reddy. 

The program concluded with the vote of thanks by the coordinator professor Mustafa. 

A sumptuous lunch was arranged for all the guests, faculty, staff and students who had attended the function.

Bearys Institute of Technology celebrated its annual cultural fest in its campus at Innoli, Mangalore on Saturday May 10.

The festivities began in the afternoon at 3.00 pm with the arrival of the chief guest U T Khader, the Karnataka state minister for health and family welfare. 

The program coordinator professor Sheikh Moidin welcomed the gathering and expressed his happiness that BIT was showcasing such marvelous talent on the dais. He said that what our youngsters become tomorrow is what we make of them today. It is our responsibility to nurture the talent of our youngsters so that they become productive tomorrow. He then formally welcomed the guests for the day’s function.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest Khader mentioned that everyone has his or her own brand and quantum of problems and it was foolish to think that someone existed without problems. The secret lies in how a person copes with it. He advised the young students that if they would take all the criticism and make a pile out of it they could easily climb over this pile to taste success. He advised them that succumbing to criticism or giving in to defeat was not acceptable if one had to make something out of his life. 

The chairman of Bearys group Syed Mohammed Beary, gave a brief word of encouragement to the students and told them that sports, games and cultural activities were all meant to teach and give enjoyment. However, they must be done within limits without which they could do more damage than good.

Prizes were given away to individuals and teams who excelled in various sporting events. The department of Mechanical Engineering won the rolling shield for the best sports performance among men while the department of Computer Science Engineering won the same among the women's category.

The department of Computer Science Engineering also won the prize for the best performance in cultural events. A special trophy was presented to the college football team that won the runners-up position in the zonal football tournament conducted by VTU.

The chief guest U T Khader was felicitated by the chairman of Bearys group Syed Mohammed Beary. Dr Shiva Prakash, head of first year academic programs, then proposed the vote of thanks. 

The formal function was followed by a host of performances by the students of BIT. These included singing, dance, instrumental music, skits and others. 

A large group of students, with their friends, parents and well wishers turned up at the lush green campus of BIT to watch and cheer the students perform.
