54 Brotherhood supporters sentenced to life for violence

Cairo, May 21 (IANS): An Egyptian court Wednesday sentenced 155 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to jail terms, including 54 life terms, over violence in August last year in the delta city of Mansoura, Xinhua quoted local TV report as saying.

Besides the 54 life sentences, the court handed down between two-to 10-year terms to the other defendants for instigating violence and chaos.

Former president Mohamed Morsi, who hailed from the now blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood group, was removed by the military in July last year after mass protests against his one-year rule.

Since Morsi's removal, his supporters have been regularly holding anti-government marches nationwide, including in Mansoura, despite a massive security crackdown on them that left about 1,000 killed and thousands arrested.

Meanwhile, some extremist Islamist groups have launched a series of bomb blasts against police and military facilities in Sinai Peninsula, the capital Cairo and different areas across Egypt.

Former military chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who led Morsi's removal, is currently running for president and is expected to make an easy win in the elections slated for May 26 and 27.
