Mangalore, May 30: Naveen Naik of Anti Naxal Force who is facing charges of shooting dead a youth named Kabeer at Tanikodu check post near Sringeri has been granted bail by the high court.

The bench headed by Justice Byra Reddy opined that the incident was not deliberate and granted bail.

The defense lawyer argued that the service record of Naveen Naik was good, and that he was awarded the President's Medal for his meritorious service and the shootout incident was not premeditated.

The judge upheld the arguments and granted bail after providing surety of Rs 50,000 and statement by a guarantor.

Kabeer from Suratkal, Mangalore, was reportedly transporting cattle from Chikmagalur via Shringeri on April 19, when the Anti-Naxal Force police stopped him at Tanikodu checkpost and allegedly shot him suspecting him to be a Naxal.

Following several protests in this regard, the government handed over the case to the CID. The CID police arrested Naveen Naik on April 24.
