Brave Mumbai youth helps police catch two conmen

Mumbai, Jun 1 (Mid-day) : A 21-year-old youth who was cheated by two men who  robbed his gold chain on April 1, finally had his revenge when he spotted the duo trying to cheat another person and informed the cops. The cheats, Gopal Suttar and Gaurishankar Dhondhara, both residents of Dadar, are now cooling their heels in police lock-up.

The Bhoiwada police first received a complaint from Nikhil Sharad Mohite, 21, a Dadar resident on April 3, that two people had approached him, telling him that they had a stolen stash of cash in their possession. “The duo told Mohite that they will willingly part with it in return for the gold chain Mohite was wearing,” a police officer recounted.
“Mohite gave his chain to the accused who handed over the  ‘cash’ wrapped in cloth, which later turned out to be just sheets of paper,” said additional commissioner of police, central region, Madhukar Pandey.

Mohite then approached the Bhoiwada police and an FIR was registered on April 4. Acting on the suggestion of assistant police inspector Vishwanath Shelar, Mohite, kept a watch on the spot near Kirti Mahal Hotel in Parel, where the duo had first approached him.

On May 26, the two accused arrived at the spot to cheat another unsuspecting youth. Mohite shouted for help, and with the help of guards, caught hold of them.

“They were cheating Mehboob Idrisi, a tailor, by using the same story,” said Pandey.
