US house resolution commits to working with Modi government

Washington, Jun 3 (IANS): As the US reaches out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a dozen lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan congressional resolution committing to working with his government "to advance shared values and interests."

Co-sponsored among others by lone Indian-American House member Ami Bera and the first Hindu-American lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, the resolution also seeks "to further strengthen our strategic partnership with India, including in the defence, trade, and security arenas."

The resolution "congratulates the people of India on holding the largest democratic exercise in history of the world."

Introduced by Republican Aaron Schock, the resolution's other co-sponsors included chairman of the House foreign affairs committee Ed Royce and the top Democrat on the panel Eliot Engel.

Schock and fellow Republican Cynthia Lummis, who had both visited Gujarat before the elections and a couple of other lawmakers also issued statements to voice their commitment to "continuing to strengthen our strategic partnership."

The resolution "marks a shift in US policy and signals growing congressional support, puts forth the official position of the House of Representatives on this matter of national and global importance," Schock said.

Meanwhile, State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters Monday that when Secretary of State John Kerry called the new Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj last week to congratulate her, he also invited her to visit the US at the earliest opportunity.

"I'm not aware of that being scheduled yet, but we'll look forward to that," she said. "So the next step will be scheduling her visit to the United States."

Kerry had also "reaffirmed the US commitment to our strategic partnership" and conveyed our desire to continue broadening and deepening our bilateral ties."

US assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, Nisha Desai Biswal will be in New Delhi June 6-9 "to meet a range of officials". But Psaki did not have the details as yet.

dear Kuldesh..my point is India can become a great developed nation, if all our parties/ leaders join together with good pro nation motives. I don't deny you and USA is not messiah. That is what I said only PM Modi can't do alone. Because opposition parties role is to oppose for everything whether it is Congress, BJP or any. In America the system/ law is in place which India needs to put in action. Again why dynasty politics with all Indian parties exists? The resources we have only need to use efficiently...does this happens? our good Brains go abroad for better pasture and those counties Nurture them fruitfully...

No one boast alone for self. Trade is necessary for all as USA got technology and India brain. Moreover USA develops together but India inly leaders and rich become richer. Modi alone can't change as example see the soaring out of control land/real estate prices...with black money involved...

so usa is a messiah to you as they will bring down our food prices as we have seen in the last 10 years.usa has other inner motives w.r.t india other than trade and nationalist indians are aware of that.we have to make our country strong by fixing the resources that are leaking and by strict policy implementation and improving infrastructure.fdi will come automatically to india once infrastructure is in place as india has abundant skilled human resource in all domains.trade will be there with all countries of the world including us.but it will be on equal footing just like china.

every one needs to understand that india is worlds second largest market after china.whole world including usa needs india to dump thier goods here and take billions of dollars outside.usa needs india more than india needs usa.a us visa is not required for modi nor he has asked for it.instead a indian visa(permission) is required for usa to dump thier goods(defence and commercial goods) here.but modi is a shrewd and calculative politician who will always think how india will be benefited.thats he is interested in reviving indian manufacturing and opening up fdi in infrastructure, defense etc.

The whole lots of side view is that lack of clarity in this relationship. How can you ask to put some extraterrestrials side view? The problems in this is the information passers. Sometimes I dont see any difference between Dons/RAW/CIA/ISI/FBI/Politicians/criminals and they make part of any agenda. Every time they think one word like Microsoft Balmer said, Who cares so as each others. Its spoiled.

USA foreign policy is that first comes their national interest. Where there are hopes of profit to them, then first they show carrot and if that does not work then stick. Through their institutions and agents they do a thorough job of planning and implementing Americanisms. For Modi and the new govt there is much to learn about American foreign policy after getting the visa.

Not a single official or representative from Modi Government has approached USA for a visa to Modi after the election. Modi has not approached USA before election. It is only USA which is after him to visit them and do business with them. For India, Modi policy is look East i.e japan and China first and rest will follow.
