Kejriwal to visit Bengal over attack on AAP volunteers

Kolkata, June 8 (IANS): A delegation of the AAP led by party chief Arvind Kejriwal will visit West Bengal shortly over an attack Sunday on its volunteers during a demonstration, a party member said.

The reported attack, in which three Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers were allegedly injured, took place during a demonstration by the party over the Bharatiya Janata Party's claims that the AAP's Bengal unit has merged with it.

"We were protesting outside the state BJP office here when suddenly we were attacked, which resulted in injuries to three of our volunteers who had to be hospitalised.

"The central leadership has condemned the attack and a party delegation led by Kejriwal will be visiting Kolkata shortly," AAP national council member Prince Pathak said.

He said a police complaint has also been lodged in the matter.

BJP leader Siddharth Nath Singh denied the involvement of his party activists in the attack.

"No one from our party is involved in the attack. But if you trespass into someone's house, you are likely to be evicted. I apologise to Kejriwal because of whom the AAP has capitulated in Delhi and disappeared from Bengal," Singh said.

Upset over state BJP president Rahul Sinha's claims that the AAP's Bengal unit has merged with the BJP, AAP members were reportedly also in the process of seeking legal action in the matter.
