Chennai, July 18: Former Indian football captain V P Sathayn committed suicide on Tuesday by throwing himself under a suburban train in Chennai.
He was 41 and is survived by his wife and a 10-year-old daughter.
The police also recovered a note in which he asked his wife for forgiveness, saying he had decided to take the drastic step due to his alcoholism and gambling habits.
"I was vexed in life. I had lost my wealth as I was habituated to drinking and gambling. I had lot of respect and admiration in the society as long as I was a football player for India. But at present, I've lost everything. I don't want to live in this world anymore," read the suicide note.
Sathyan had captained India in the 1993 Pre World Cup at Beirut and Seoul as well as the Nehru Cup in the same year. He was also a member of the 1993 SAF Cup team as well as the SAF Games team in 1995.
Sathyan won the Federation Cup twice with Kerela Police as well as with Mohun Bagan during his 12-year career. He was the coach for the Indian Bank in Chennai.
