We are like prisoners here, say Indian nurses in Iraq

New Delhi, Jun 17 (AFP): Indian nurses stranded in northern Iraq have been living like prisoners at a state-run hospital in Tikrit after being abandoned by their employers as well as the military, reports said Tuesday. As many as 46 nurses from the southern Indian state of Kerala are in Iraq waiting for the turmoil to subside, NDTV and other media reported.

"We are afraid because we have no security here," Marina Jose, one of the nurses, told NDTV by phone from the northwestern city, which was seized by Sunni insurgents recently.

"All the military, police, everybody escaped from here. Only we are here. We are literally prisoners within the hospital premises. There are no Iraqi employees here," she said.

Since the insurgents launched their lightning assault on June 9, they have captured Mosul, a city of two million people, and a big chunk of mainly Sunni Arab territory stretching south towards the capital.

The offensive has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and sent jitters through world oil markets as the militants have advanced ever nearer Baghdad leaving the Shia-led government in disarray.

Jose said the Red Cross had made contact with the group. "If it is safe they (Red Cross) can take us from here. Otherwise we have to stay here," she said.

The Indian foreign ministry said the situation in Iraq was receiving "high priority" but ruled out any immediate emergency evacuation of its nationals.

"Crisis management meeting underway on situation in Iraq and possibilities of assistance to Indian nationals," foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin posted on Twitter on Tuesday, adding that a "24 hour control room to provide information on Iraq."

People have forgotten what Modi, as CM of Gujrath, had done during the Uttarkhand disaster. He had only saved the people from his state Gujrath. Dear Modi, please wake up from your slumber and do something concrete for these nurses! You are the PM of the whole country and not the PM of only 19% of the people who have voted for you!

    Dear kuldesh, bangalore,

You should come out from your Communal mindset and love every human being of this world.

Secondly, Did you hear when Kuwait was attacked in the year 1990 most of the Indians were evacuated from Kuwait and there was no forex reserves to pay for our imports and debts???!!! And during the gulf war many Indians returned back to India. Forex reserves were so low.

The Chendrashekar government mortgaged our gold to U.K.
If U.K. was not giving us loan????!!!! And many fundoos are against U.K., because they are white people

It is Dr. Manmohan Singhji saved the country from economic brink before and brought back gold from U.K.

WITHOUT FOREIGN REMITTANCES, IMPORTS AND EXPORTS WE ARE NOTHING.
Any nation cannot survive at its own without the help and assistance from another nation.

Also there is no ban to travel iraq and iraq visa has been issued not only by Indian Govt !! We many people are working and came iraq from the middle eastern countries and many from direct india on different genuine visa. Please dont comment anything id you dont kniw the fact and rules.Even my passport got renewed in India 6 years ago and there is no restriction to travel Iraq . Dear Ramesh,

Don’t think lightly about remittances from ME from Indians. Whole country should thank Keralites for making India the top remittance receiving countries in the world. During the time of economic crisis even remittances from the Indian unskilled workers in the Gulf region also saved the turmoil situation for India!!.To run the economy, maintain foreign reserve, these things are very very important. Government revenue also increases with the outflow of emigrants to abroad in various form fees of Visas, departure taxes etc. But one thing I agree that you told “we should avoid travelling to war torn countries like Afghanistan/Iraq “.

First of all ask yourself, Are Christians a threat to the nation?! We are a tiny/smallest Christian community and why we are threatened from:
    1) Attack on our churches
    2) Nuns were raped.
    3) In Gujarat under the nose of Modi first carried out atrocities against Christians.
    4) In Orissa vhp, bjp, bd have burnt our churches, houses and killed scores of people.
    5) In Madhya Pradesh our pastors, priest and lay men were beaten on the streets.

DO YOU FIND ANYBODY MORE LOYAL TO THE NATION THAN CHRISTIANS?!
Since independence the organizations like RSS, BD, Rama Sena, VHP, Abhinav Bharat are with envy to suppress Christian community and it was our might and love for humans kept us alive from our Lord God through non-fundamental Hindus/good Hindus.

But when govt has clearly given instructions not to visit that country for any reason then they, as a Indian National must obey the orders of the constitution. the rule is implemented after several kidnapping cases in Iraq and Afghanistan.. ..there is clear instruction in passport that we should avoid travelling to war torn countries like Afghanistan/Iraq so on..But Kerala is a state where nearly 70% of the work force works in gulf countries..over the year Congress & Left parties only enjoyed free investments of foreign exchange but no industrial developments..Industry which started died prematurely due to CPI,CPM labour policies..state is ruled only by Congress & left over the years..instead of MODI, better people like JI,RAZA ACADEMY,MADANI,ZAKIR who pretend like international citizens (burn India for Burma incident) should go ti Iraq & bring people..

    Dear Ramesh,
There are an estimated 16,000 to 18,000 Indians are in Iraq. They are belonged to various states. If your argument is true then don’t blame a particular state, include all those states in your analysis.

Our foreign policy and human life value, and concern for our people will be exhibited to the WORLD COMMUNITY from the move Govt is going to take from this issue.
We get problems to test how we handle them and move forward which in fact strengthens us.

Travelling to Countries like Iraq and Afghanistan for job's sake is always dangerous. Rocket science is not required to understand this but the common sense is required. If you have decided to travel, then you should be ready for these kind of terror attacks also. This comes as a total package along with your job.
Now blaming government is not going to help because rescuing operation is not so simple.
They are killing Shia's only. Will they spare any other religion?
We have to keep our fingers crossed and that's all we can do at this point of time.

    Mr Shekh
Your comments are very funny saying conspiracy against Muslims for their own internal problems. The problem of yours is feeling insecurity among others and it creates suspicion on others and ultimately leads to conspiracy theories and accordingly 9/11(twin attack), 26/11(Mumbai attack) are conspiracies and it is internal handy work and like wise the conspiracy lists goes on.....

    Mr Peter
Israel is not killing innocents but the terrorists like hamas and Palestine group are covered by innocent mask in front of the world. Its nothing but conspiracy against Israel. Palestine children's are used as live bombers Why do have you so sympathy toward Palestines? why not same toward our own Kashmir pandits???

Who is responsible for bombing of Shia & Ahmedia places of worship in Pakistan ?
Who is responsible for Shia -Sunni animosity in our own Lucknow (UP) or Hyderabad (AP)? Is it USA or Israel who is playing games even in Pak, or Lucknow or Hyderabad ?. What is this Shaafi & Sunni quarrel in our own district ?.

How America and Russia is trying to dominate in the world, same way Saudi Arabia and Iran is trying to dominate in the islamic world. Both have their own group of countries supporting them. Saudi is supported by US and Iran is supported by Russia. Libya and Syria is a follower of Iran. Now who is playing the dirty game and who is funding this dirty game is up to you to understand. For America it is just a business but terror is created by who?
    Who funded iraq war?
