Sugar Rises by Rs 60 on Import Duty Hike

New Delhi, Jun 23 (Agencies) : Sugar prices rose up to Rs 60 per quintal in the country's leading wholesale markets on stockists buying after the government raised import duty on the sweetener to 40 per cent besides additional interest-free loan of Rs 4,400 crore for mills.

Further, increased offtake by bulk consumers to meet summer season demand also influenced prices.

In the national capital, Sugar ready M-30 and S-30 traded higher at Rs 3,320-3,460 and Rs 3,300-3,430 as against previous levels of Rs 3,270-3,400 and Rs 3,250-3,380 per quintal. Thus showing a rise of Rs 50/60 per quintal.

Fears that sugar prices may rise further in the wake of government's decision to discourage import by raising duty to 40 per cent and improve funds liquidity for the domestic sugar mills, stockists were seen enlarging positions, said sugar traders.

They said if monsoon remains subdued, prices are well set to rise further in coming days.

"The hike in duty will support domestic sugar industry and make imports costlier", said a wholesale sugar trader in the national capital.

The loan will be provided to cash-starved sugar mills to make payments to cane farmers, while the import duty on sugar will be hiked to 40 per cent from the current 15 per cent, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said.

In order to bail out sugar mills that are unable to pay Rs 11,000 crore dues to sugarcane growers, the government also extend subsidy of Rs 3,300 per tonne on export till September this year.

In line with general trend, sugar mill delivery M-30 and S-30 followed suit and traded higher at Rs 3,160-3,300 and Rs 3,140-3,240 against last close of Rs 3,130-3,245 and Rs 3,110-3,225 per quintal, respectively.

In the millgate section, Mawana, Kinnoni and Asmoli also ended higher at Rs 3,230, Rs 3,300 and Rs 3,250 from previous levels of Rs 3,160, Rs 3,240 and Rs 3,210 per quintal, respectively.

At Mumbai's Vashi wholesale market, Small sugar (S-30) advanced by Rs 25 per qunintal to Rs 3,030/3,152 from last Satursday's closing level of Rs 3,005/3,152.

Medium sugar (M-30) climbed by Rs 15 per quintal to Rs 3,152/3,316 as against last weekend level of Rs 3,152/3,301.

Price hike is on sugar which is imported, not produced by our farmers.

    Matthew, Nitte,
In India at this point of time a bigger portion taxpayers’ money being channeled into overseas banks by means of scams, than what’s doled out as subsidies. And unless that is curbed, the gap between rich and the poor will go on increasing and we all know from history the dire consequences of this gap reaching a critical stage. Looks like the hoarders of black money, counting on this ill gotten wealth to come to their rescue should the rich – poor gap to reach such a critical stage.
Another avenue where tax payers’ money being drained is our massive defense budget. A country with limited resources and a vast population such as ours simply can’t afford this. It’s possible for a country like US because of petro-dollar system, thanks to Nixon and Kissinger.
Only a genuinely wise leadership at the center (for the past 67 years we haven’t found one) with some innovative ideas and means can re-route this massive monetary flow from defense to some productive economic activity.

Though the import duty hiked by 25% (15% to 40%) sugar price raised only by Rs60, ie, by less than 2% from the prevailing price per quintol. Impact on per Kg is hardly Re 1. That too this hike has other factors too like hoarding, summer demand etc. The other measures like loans by the Central Govt are to suppose to benefit mills who in turn expected to clear the dues to farmers. If mills clear their dues to farmers, who will benefit, of course farmers. The Govt action also discourage imports and encourage exports by increase in in house production. There is export subsidy in place. This will help in reducing fiscal deficit/ balance of payments too. If every thing falls in its place this step can prove beneficial in the long run. Let us wait and see before jumping around with negativity on the subject. Aren't we able to think rationally? If you all do not want to think so, it is left to you.

Good days are coming... Hike in the rate will not profit to farmers, its gain to sugar cane owners (majority of factories are owned by political leaders) so what benefit will farmer will get. The sugar recovery at present is 105kg to 130 kg for one ton on sugar cane crushing. Farmers will get 2500 rs (present Karnataka rate) per ton. Each acre farmer can yield average 25 to 30 tons, and it is long time crop (12 to 18 months required to harvest) Govt increase the price 3, 4 times in year but farmer will get same rate year. We have to think what farmers will benefit…..Hike will burden to common people. If factories are failed to repay the amount to farmers then why govt quite on factories? Why no action on factories? Factories make crores of profit but don’t have money to pay to farmers. If govt is really have concern towards farmers then should take legal action on factories those are not paid to farmers and should not to put burden on common people hiking the rate. 60 rs hike per quintal will be direct profit to owners and govt not to farmers.

And yes there IS a way - other than breaking back of common man - to reduce the massive deficit. Remember BJP’s tallest claim in the election manifesto? They promised all those tons of black moolah would be brought back from Swiss bank and all our economic issues would be resolved. It’s different thing that anyone with little bit of common sense didn’t buy this. It’s because of those who DID, everyone has to pay a price now.

India is second largest producer of the sugar in the world. Tweaking of duty will not have any affect on prices since international prices are record low due to glut in sugar. Of course price increased by
60 paise a k.G (Rs.60 per quintal) due physiological factors rather than real issue. Provided proper incentive given to industry and agriculturist, India could be top exporter in the world.

Dont be blind on.every aspect...Hiking Import duty on goods is against WTO rules...because we are the one who export much of the food products to the world we dont want happen it in other country bcos it will certainly affect our export but here we are hiking it here....I am concerned why only sugar....cotton,onion etc farmers too commit suicide...You ppl still want modis popularity not Indias popularity...shame on you people to justify everything

Reality is that Govt has taken decision in the best interest of Poor Farmers and Industry. If both are healthy and efficient, then only we can get sugar at reasonable prices. (otherwise jaggery coffee or imported sugar at Rs.200/- per K.G)Sitting AC cabin in Mumbai, anybody can comment any thing. But,harsh reality is that the Govt has taken good decision. Govt cannot subsidise each and every commodity. Under UPA rule, we have paid Rs.100/- to onion and govt has not given single paise subsidy, but delayed decision to import which had helped hoarders and black marketeers. Truth is always bitter and I think most of people will disagree with me. Never mind and I am neither hesitated nor bothered

Looks like mother nature is not pleased with the election results:) Superstitions apart, science says ... what goes up, comes down...

The new government strategy is this. They have to make good for all election expenses, and provision for filling up of governmental / personal coffers early.
Right now, irrespective of what they do, their supporters have no face to protest, and in fact, they will control those who protest too. The news clippings of MASS SUPPORT, HEADBANDS, CHANTS, CHARCHAS all is fresh in the mind.

After a while, when the supporters realize the folly, then it will be time to go anyway, and there is little room to make good.
So reaping the fruits of their labour when it is still going good.

Pukka strategy. So whatever the masses say, all kind of RISES are in the air for a while. Once the agenda (capitalists) and the coffers(party??) is met, then things will become stable, of course at the raised bar.

I had doubts about inclusive development, communal harmony and such social issues, and many others too, but had not expected to be proven right this early. Wicked me is having some silent glee at the turn of events :)

I am still keeping my fingers crossed. Government may surprise us after all... (positive thinking).

When transportation prices are raised every other prices rise. And given by the ethics of Indians there is no need for a reason to raise the prices of essential goods. Thus unscrupulous sellers raise prices at every other opportunity. Be it is restaurants, Vegetable vendors, Meat vendors, Ration vendors, Taxiwalla, Auto rikshawwallah etc. Now the question is here was a government in Congress which stood for the masses like poor and middle class. Our foolish voters were royally brainwashed by the FEKUs funded by scoundrel industrialists voted them out of power. Now face the music. BJP is for rich people only. But silver-lining is inexperienced BJP will soon be kicked out and electorate will bring back known corrupt devil The age old Congress. Absolutely correct decision of Modi govt which is long overdue. Congress has slept over the demands for 18 months. It will protect the interest of lakhs of poor farmers particularly based in UP,TN,AP, Karnataka etc. Not only it help ailing sugar industry, but also farmers will get their pending dues/arrears of Rs.11,000 crores from mills. There may be a marginal rise in sugar prices that people do not mind paying in the interest of farmers and nation a a whole.(also note that sugar price not increased in last few years due to glut in international market) It is strange that people with IPod in their hand going to multiplex also now start complaining. Tomorrow, jobless congis will start protesting. Shame on you.

Your wasting your time. Most folks here don't understand/don't want to understand basics of economics. Many of them haven't bothered reading the article fully where it clearly states "hike in export prices to help domestic sugar producers". Unfortunately, childish name calling and empty rhetoric contributes nothing to the discussion. Nobody wants to debate how to reduce the massive deficit. Those criticizing LPG/Diesel/train fare hike should understand what under-recoveries have done to the state owned oil companies. And how poor management and subsidies have left Indian Railways with annual deficit of 24000 Crores., and Air India with 46000 crores. Unless harsh steps are taken, the government will have only one option i.e. to shut down the train and ground all Air India planes.

It is time the center makes plan to exit all forms of government regulated price controls. Every developed nation has free market policies where food, fuel and transport are market based. Subsidies is just another form of robbing from Paul to pay Peter. Thanks to Nehuruvian economics, we have government involvement in everything from agarbattis to airlines.

60 Rupees per quintal means 60 paise per KG of sugar? Can't you guys afford?

This decision has been taken considering the best interest of the poor farmers and ailing sugar industries. This move will benefit our country farmers as people will be prompted to use inside sugars.

Remember a farmer in Belgaum committed suicide when Assmebly session was taking place, in front of Suvarana Soudha. It is because he was not getting proper price for his crops.
