Andhra court issues arrest warrant against Dhoni

Hyderabad, June 24 (IANS): A court in Andhra Pradesh Tuesday issued an arrest warrant against Indian cricket team captain M.S. Dhoni for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus.

A local court in Anantapur issued the arrest warrant as Dhoni did not appear in the court despite three summons served in the past. It directed police to present Dhoni in the court July 16.

The case relates to a picture on the cover of a magazine.

Business Today in its April 2013 edition had carried the picture. Dhoni was portrayed as Hindu god Vishnu with a sub title "God of Big Deals" and holding products of several companies including a shoe in his hand.

Y. Shyam Sunder, a local leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), had filed a petition in the court in February this year alleging that the cricketer hurt the sentiments of Hindus by denigrating a Hindu god.

The summons issued by the court to Dhoni on three occasions were returned. The court, which took up the hearing Tuesday, issued the arrest warrant.

Similar petitions against Dhoni were filed in Delhi, Pune and other cities.

Action on Dhoni is because in the advertisement he is carrying a shoe in one of his hand. But, logically it is not his hand because he has only two hands. Or, they will have to prove that Dhoni has eight hands. Then the accusation has some weight.

In india if anyone speaks against his own community or religion is considered as a secular person. This kind of perception should be stopped.India has a rich cultural n religious heritage which holds the entire nation togather irrespective of all odds. We must learn to respect each n every person in the world and his or her religious beliefs. No one has the right to hurt anyones sentiments.I will be the least bothered person if the court sends dhoni to two or more years jail, eventhough i am a big fan of dhoni.

The arrest warrant seems to be due to the contempt of court caused by Dhoni failing to heed to summons, rather than based on the nature of complaint itself. The point of who is culpable for such a portrait (Dhoni/publisher) is yet to be determined by the court. I don't think cover pages are determined by the person portrayed but instead by publishers to gather attention to their magazines on news stands. Eventually the publisher may be penalized. But Dhoni should know better than to ignore a court's summons to testify.

If at all, Dhoni overlooked or failed to realize the consequence, still it is not too late. He can officially/formally regret his mistake or else such sentiments may bring un due public reaction or hurdles in his cricketing career. After all, we are human beings and bound to make mistakes .

    Your argument is valid Jossey.
But the point here is the case was filed against Dhoni and was admitted by the court.
Whether Dhoni is right or wrong it is another matter but Dhoni should not have ignored the summons by the court.
I am basically not against depicting God in One's imagination as long as it is not done in a bad taste (I mean deliberate provoking)
As such the magazine cover was not derogatory (except the shoe in hand for some)and it is a non issue for me.

The court should have asked the advertising company to appear. The advertisement should have been withdrawn, if it hurt the sentiments of the people. As far as Dhoni is concerned, he should have clarified his stand and should have apologised to the people. Unknowingly we do make mistakes. When pointed out, we should have the humility to accept it. We are living in a country, where sentiments play a crucial role.

Depicting someone in Gods image in the serials and portraying someone as God (for products) for commercial purpose are two different issues. The greed for money sometimes makes a person blind in his thoughts and actions. In my opinion it is not only Dhoni, but even the advertising company should also be held responsible for creating such a situation.

    Flavian,

I have all reasons to believe that Dhoni will not pose for a picture with all those products in his hand because such a scene will look like he is begging to ensure his clients that he can sell anything.

I don't think Dhoni has a need to advertise himself - producers must be waiting in queue to book appointment with his PR office several years in advance !

The party that put this particular advertising must be a marketing/promoting agent. Dhoni has all rights to sue such a party because there is violation of certain code of business.

I feel, instead Dhoni should have sued the Newspaper for publishing a picture of the sort because he many not even be knowing that such a thing happened.

Using technology and computer graphics, anybody's picture can be morphed by just pasting the head on a torso. Why isn't the organization suing the producers of the products pictured there ?

Is this the very VHP that cattle from Northern India to Kerala Go-Shalas that are suing Dhoni ? Shouldn't one wonder who appointed VHP as protector of Hindu God/Goddesses ?

    Cletus,

Business Today will get a Terms and Conditions form signed by the advertiser and print a matter because it gives them revenue. They will not find out if the advertiser has taken consent of the celebrity because at any given time, they have the T&C to wash their hands off.

At the same time, it will be a real joke to believe that Dhoni has indeed posed for such a picture because he is such a hot brand ambassador that he will hardly have time for cheap publicity.

    Prabha,

Should I not say, commenting on a public forum in a rude manner is not your business too ?

Lady, we all have our own religion and we are protecting it in our own way. Not Hindus alone do it. Got it ? How come Dhoni is not a Hindu then ? He does not seem to be protecting his religion - does he ?

For your information, VHP is an organization, not an individual. When individuals do their religion protection based duty, where is the need of organization then ? Eh ?

If you were so proud of what VHP is doing, you would have gathered the essence in their sending cattle to a state that legal sells cattle-meat. This is an issue I raised in my first comment, how could you by-pass it ?
