Two Haryana doctors arrested for sex detection tests

Chandigarh, June 28 (IANS): Conducting sex determination tests on pregnant women has landed two doctors in Haryana behind bars following raids on their clinics, a health department spokesman said Saturday.

"Two doctors were arrested by the police after they were found conducting sex determination tests at Kanina in Mahendargarh district and at Charkhi Dadri in Bhiwani district, during raids conducted by the health department and food and drug administration officials," the spokesman said.

He said an ultrasound machine had been sealed and cases were registered against the doctors for violating the PC and PNDT (Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Act and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.

Officials of both departments jointly raided the Sanjivini Hospital, located at Ambedkar Chowk in Kanina. "Doctors in the hospital were caught red-handed while doing a case of sex determination," the spokesman said.

"The department put up a decoy customer who went along with a decoy patient. A sex determination test was settled for Rs.7,000 to ascertain the sex of the unborn child.

"The doctor said the lady carried a girl child. The team immediately nabbed the doctor while accepting the money," he said.

In the second raid at Guddi Clinic and Dhankhad Health Care at Charkhi Dadri, the officials found medicines, MTP instruments and records. Following this, a case under the MTP Act was registered and the accused doctor arrested.
