Police on alert for holy month of Ramzaan in UP

Lucknow, June 30 (IANS): Uttar Pradesh Police have been put on alert across the state for the holy month of Ramzaan, officials said Monday.

The local intelligence units (LIU) have been sensitized in the districts with history of communal tension during the month of Ramzaan.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Mukul Goyal in a letter to district police chiefs and the LIU units has asked them to remain alert against any mischief while keeping eye on the social networking sites.

In the past, such sites have been platforms to foment communal strife as happened in the case of Muzaffarnagar, and hence they need to be closely watched, an official told IANS.

Police pickets have been asked to make rounds in the minority-dominated areas and immediately inform senior officials about even a slightest of suspicion on any activity of individuals, people or groups.

The heightened security comes against the backdrop of a series of communal riots that have singed the state in the past two years under the Akhilesh Yadav government.
