Building collapse: NHRC notice to Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, July 2 (IANS): The NHRC has issued notice to Tamil Nadu asking for a report on the June 28 Chennai building collapse in which 30 people were killed, a statement said Wednesday.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notice to the state chief secretary and sought the report within two weeks.

Citing media reports, the commission said the Tamil Nadu chief minister had said the building collapsed due to constructional defects and the builder had violated various norms.

"The contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the people who died and of those who were injured in the incident," said the statement.

The death toll in the collapse of the 11-storey under-construction building went up to 30 Tuesday while 27 people have been rescued from under the debris. About 70 people were still feared trapped under the rubble, officials said.
