Air India plane with Kerala nurses reaches Mumbai

Mumbai/Kochi, July 5 (IANS): A special Air India flight with 183 people on board, including the 46 nurses freed by insurgents in Iraq, arrived here Saturday morning, spelling relief for the Indian government and families of the stranded Indians.

The plane landed for refuelling and for loading food for the passengers. Nobody disembarked in Mumbai, and the plane is expected to leave for Kochi, where it will land around 11.50 a.m.

The plane will then fly to Hyderabad and finally to New Delhi, Air India officials said.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that at one point of time, he had lost all hope as the plane did not get permission to land in Erbil because of heavy wind.

He thanked External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for all efforts made to bring back the nurses to India.

The flight includes the 46 Indian nurses from Kerala whose fate in strife-torn Iraq had kept the entire nation on tenterhooks for the past few days.

Reports said many nurses protested at the Erbil airport, saying they won't board the plane unless they are paid their four months' arrear salary.

Indian officials persuaded them, and they finally agreed.

All the 180 passengers, plus three crew members, are reported to be safe, the officials said.

Chandy will receive the nurses at the Kochi airport, where a special immigration desk has been set up.

The Air India flight took off earlier from Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan, after the nurses were freed by the insurgents following intense Indian diplomatic efforts.

Thanks go, first and second,to our central/state governments efforts to bring back the nurses from valley of death.

And there is a humble request is please don't comment rubbishy and which has p-lace in dust bin.many

Guys, be a little sensible while commenting! Oomen Chandy, if so powerful, why he had to camp in Delhi? he cld have done it from Kottayam itself!! He cldn't even get those Italian Sailors extradited from italy for murdering his Fishermen! Have u heard of SARABJIT SINGH? How he dies in Pak and UPA made a mess out of whole thing? failed diplomacy is Congress's USP! ... Ok forget it, last year when somebody reported that Modi saved few people stranded in Uttarakhan .. u were all laughing, cos a CM cant do anything n only center does it?? hypocrisy? Here Ajit doval and his team's threat of air strike in worst case, if anythign is to happen to his citizen, INS Mysore being ready, and also Diplomats working parallely had done the trick! definitely as Modi said CM center team work was necessary!.... Now, let Chandy give them a job and IRAQ level of salary if he has good Kerala model! These nurses were poor and Kerala economy makes them go out to wartorn countires for daily bread! he shld fix conditions at home.. Modi on swearing day itself has got prisorners released from Pak n SL! his good streak continues and he never claims heroics! better sense prevailed on Chandy as he thanked Center too... rest 480 indians also will return soo, by tuesday! wait for that,to congratualate Oomen chandy! .. I want safe return of people thats it...and hope their gulf itch goes once they come back.. we have acche din here soon too! -)

Going by Modi's boasting habit, do u think he would have remained silent if he had even 1% contribution in freeing those Kerala nurses?

His silence reveals that he has done NOTHING to secure the release of Indians held captive in Iraq.

By the way what is Rambo Mody doing to save the punjabis stuck in Iraq?

modi never boasts of anything.has he called press confernce to boast his success?he is the real lion india waited for so long.he showed indias power by sending ins mysore warships of destroyer class to iraq border to send a message what india is capable off if it is rubbed the wrong way.that may have shivered isis that if they attack these nurses they will be getting a fitting reply.might always works(laatho ke booth battonh se nahi maantey).he is a doer.he does the work and let his work speak for himself.omar abdullah challenged him to come to kashmir if he has dum.now see he has even visited the kashmir border city uri.in just 1 month you can see his approach.just imagine what he will do in 5 years.

“It (release of the nurses) didn’t happen just like that. There were enormous efforts undertaken both in and out of Iraq... India has friends both in and out of Iraq. We knocked on many doors, one door opened,” MEA spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told reporters in New Delhi. It is not clear if any ransom was paid to secure the release of the nurses.

now anyone can judge whether bcoz of the central govt or chandy Indian nurses were released.
any way its a good news that they are safe and reached motherland.

IT'S SURPRISING WHEN NURSES ARE EXPRESSING THEIR APPRECIATION TOWARDS REBELS AS NONE OF THEM BEEN HARMED OR TORTURED AT ALL.INSTEAD THEY TREATED THEM WITH ALL THE RESPECT,GIVING FOODS ON TIME AND RESPONDING TO THEIR REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING TO GET CONTACT WITH THEIR FAMILIES AND EMBASSY. NONE OF OFFICIALS COULD ACTUALLY REACH THEM TILL THEY HANDED OVER TO INDIAN EMBASSY.

Good Job by the Central Government, no easy task to negotiate when the country is in turmoil, but what is disgusting is the "Protest and refusal to board the aircraft by some Nurses" apparently for these Mallu's money is more important than their safety ... earlier reports in the Gulf Press mentioned that many of them did not want to return to India as they had taken huge loans to "BUY VISAS" ..

What irks me is that these self centered protesters would have jeopardized the lives of their colleagues who wanted to leave as there was hectic lobbying by the MEA And PMO to get this aircraft permission to land at Erbil (ATC Denied permission) ...
