Nearly 800,000 displaced in Pakistan

Islamabad, July 8 (IANS): Nearly 800,000 people have been internally displaced in Pakistan as a military operation against militants progressed in North Waziristan, media reported Tuesday.

The Fata Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) Tuesday said the number of displaced people in Pakistan's North Waziristan region has reached 800,000, the Dawn online reported.

The FDMA data said the number of displaced families was 62,493, including 2,11,549 male and 236,883 female members, while the number of children was 339,456.

An FDMA spokesman said the government is determined to register every displaced person in order to ensure speedy distribution of relief amount, goods and other services so that no family was deprived of the facilities.

The Pakistan Army launched an operation named "Zarb-e-Azb" against militants hiding in North Waziristan a week after the terrorist attack on the country's busiest airport in Karachi.

At least 30 people, including security personnel, civilians and 10 terrorists of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, were killed in the June 8 attack on Karachi's Jinnah International Airport.
