Bengal student murder: Prime accused nabbed

Kolkata, July 9 (IANS): Shyamal Karmakar, the prime accused in the horrific killing of a Bengal college student, has been arrested, police said Wednesday. A lower court later remanded Karmakar in police custody for 14 days.

Karmakar, a known goon, was nabbed from Rampurhat station in Birbhum district Tuesday night, North 24-Parganas district police superintendent Tanmay Roychowdhury told media persons.

Karmakar is said to be the kingpin of the group which lynched student Sourav Chowdhury and chopped his body into pieces.

Sourav paid with his life for raising his voice against anti-social activities and illegal liquor dens in the area.

The student's dismembered body parts were found between Duttapukur and Bamangachi stations in North 24-Parganas district Saturday. It sparked outrage across the state.

Alongside Karmakar, two of his associates were also arrested. With this, the total number of those rounded up by the police in connection with the gruesome murder of the student has gone up to 11.

Roychowdhury said police got tip-offs about Karmakar's hiding places by questioning other members of his gang arrested over the past few days.

Amid tight security, Karmakar was presented in court, which sent him to 14-day police remand.

Meanwhile, Sourav's elder brother Sandip has demanded that Karmakar be given capital punishment.

"All others involved and those pulling strings from behind should also be arrested. All steps should be taken to restore peace in Bamangachi."

A team of Left Front legislators visited Sourav's residence and promised all help to the bereaved family in their fight for justice.

"We don't want to go into any party politics. Steps should be taken, irrespective of political affiliations, against all those involved in anti-social activities, murders, and running gambling dens," said Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra of the CPI-M.

The state's ruling Trinamool Congress also took out a rally in the Bamangachi area.
