Mizoram governor resigns

Thiruvananthapuram, July 11 (IANS): Mizoram Governor Vakkom Purushothaman, who was transferred to Nagaland, said here Friday that he has resigned.

Speaking to reporters on his arrival here, Purushothaman said it's improper to transfer governor's like government staff.

"Now I will be involved in party work here and will not go after power politics," said the 86-year-old veteran Congress leader who has served as assembly speaker and minister, as also the Lt Governor of the Andaman And Nicobar Islands.

Last week speculation surfaced that among the Congress appointed governors, Purushothaman would be asked to put in his papers. Though that did not happen, he was transferred from Mizoram to Nagaland.

Purushothaman had around two years left of his tenure and now all eyes are on another Keralite Congress leader, K. Sankaranarayanan, the Maharashtra governor, on what his next move would be.

Kerala Governor Sheila Dikshit's fate also hangs in balance.
