Attackers steal guns, torch school in Kenya

Nairobi, July 11 (IANS): Armed assailants stole six guns from Kenya Police Reservists and torched a school in Kenya's coastal Lamu County, media reported Friday.

"We received reports of an attack late Thursday in a village where militants set ablaze Pandanguo primary school and several houses," Xinhua quoted an official as saying.

The official said that a joint team of security personnel and the General Service Unit (GSU) have been deployed in the area and the situation is now under control.

The latest incident came after police arrested 69 suspects in ongoing operations following recent killings in the coastal region.

About 50 heavily armed attackers struck at a police station in Tana River County last Saturday, killing several people.

Police have blamed the incidents on a separatist group of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), who believe the coastal people's rights to land and property ownership have been violated.
