Malaysia plane 'shot down' over Ukraine, 295 feared dead

Updated

Kuala Lumpur, Jul 17 (PTI): All 295 people on board a Malaysia Airlines plane were feared dead today after the aircraft was reportedly shot down over war-torn eastern Ukraine near the Russian border, nearly four months after the mysterious disappearance of MH370 in the Indian Ocean.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew.

The passenger liner came down close to the town of Shaktarsk in Ukraine's rebellion-wracked region of Donetsk after disappearing from the radar and teams from the emergency services were trying to reach the scene, Russian media quoted an unnamed security source as saying.

Burning aircraft wreckage and bodies strewn on the ground were seen at the village of Grabovo, some 40 kms from the Russian border in an area where pro-Russian rebels are reportedly active.

Malaysia Airlines confirmed on Twitter, "Malaysian Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position of the plane was over Ukrainian airspace".

Malaysia's Star newspaper quoting sources said the plane was "shot down" while cruising at an altitude of 30,000 feet.

Ukraine Interior Ministry said 295 people are feared dead in the crash, it said.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko also said that the jetliner may have been shot down over his country's airspace.

"We do not exclude that the plane was shot down and confirm that the Ukraine Armed Forces did not fire at any targets in the sky," Poroshenko said in a statement posted on the president's website.

The plane could have been brought down by a ground-to-air missile, sources said.

"I am shocked by reports that an MH plane crashed," Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said on his Twitter feed.

"We are launching an immediate investigation," he said as he headed to the Kuala Lumpur airport.

ITAR-Tass news agency reported that the airliner flying at the altitude of over 10,000 metres was supposed to enter the Russian air space at 17:20 Moscow standard time.

"However, it fell down in 60 kms from the border; the plane's emergency location beacon went off," the agency reported quoting sources.

Today's crash comes four months after the Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines MH370 disappeared with 239 people including five Indians on board after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8. The plane has still not been found.

A number of Ukrainian military planes have been shot down by missiles in recent weeks. Ukraine has accused Russia's military of supplying advanced missiles to the rebels.

Earlier today, Ukrainian officials blamed the Russian air force for shooting down one of its jets yesterday.

Tensions have been high between Ukraine and Russia since street protests forced former pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych from power in February.

Russia subsequently annexed Ukraine's southeastern Crimea region and a pro-Russia separatist rebellion has been raging in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

Ukrainian forces have been struggling to quell the separatist unrest. Ukraine's government has accused Russia of allowing weapons and military equipment, including tanks, to cross the border illegally into the hands of pro-Russia separatists.

Very cruel and inhuman act of killing innocent citizens!! May their souls RIP!!

Though it was well known that there was heightened tension going on in this zone and the fighters owned sophisticated weapons, and had previously downed some military aircraft how could passenger jetliners be allowed to fly over that dangerous zone??

Everywhere innocent people are being massacred like flies on the pretext of various issues!!

Why, in the first place, are they manufacturing such dangerous sophisticated weapons of destruction and selling them, which can easily fall into the hands of dangerous criminals/groups!!!

If the plane was shot down from the ground over Ukrainian territory it would make little sense for the Russians to do it...because murdering civilians doesn't make anyone look good. It would make little sense for the Ukrainians to do it for the same reason...plus they control their airspace and would likely intercept any Russian incursion with fighters. The rebels in the Ukraine wouldn't likely do it on purpose....but they have used missiles to bring down Ukrainian helicopters and transport aircraft. If they thought it was a Ukrainian military flight, I have no doubt the rebels would do it.

Air travel of ordinary passengers increasingly becoming unsafe & very dangerous these days. Imagine why we do not get to hear any such type of accidents to planes that carry VVIPs or to private jets carrying big industrialists? Coz they are constantly monitored with high alert from the take-off till they land at desired destination. Why would aviation industry do not apply the same level of alertness & care while flying ordinary passengers? If this civil aircraft is deliberately shot down from the height of 10k meters without bothering to verify its status, then no excuses can justify this horrible crime !! No amount of justification is acceptable to brush aside this deliberate genocide !! Once US did the same with Iran Air in Gulf area and convinced the world by giving bloody excuses. Now Ukrain & Russia is trying to convince world as if it is an accident by taking US into confidence.
