One-horned rhino killed in Assam

Guwahati, July 18 (IANS): Poachers have killed yet another one-horned rhinoceros in Assam's Kaziranga National Park and taken away its horn, a forest official said Friday.

This came to light after the recovery of a carcass of a full grown rhino in Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The poachers have taken away the horn of the rhino, the forest official added.

This is the 22nd rhino killed within a short span of seven months this year.

"A carcass of a full grown rhino was recovered from Kohora forest range of the park Friday during a routine patrolling. The horn of the rhino was missing," said the official.

He said poachers used AK-47 rifles and handmade guns to kill the rhino. An axe was found near the carcass.

"The poachers might have killed the rhino Thursday night and taken away the horn after chopping it off," the forest official said.

On July 10, poachers killed a rhino at Burhapahar range of the park and took away its horn.

A total of 42 rhinos were poached in Assam last year which include 27 rhinos from the Kaziranga National Park.
