Mamata seeks central funds for disaster management

Darjeeling, July 18 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday said her government has sought funds from the central government for management of natural disasters in Darjeeling district, on par with the northeastern states.

She also announced the formation of a committee to look into tackling natural hazards such as earthquakes and landslides in the district.

"We have been pursuing this matter with the centre. The centre has given so much funds to the north east for disaster management. We have said you give money to Darjeeling also," she told reporters here after a district administrative meeting.

Banerjee said the special committee will comprise the district magistrate, municipal officials and scientific experts to handle natural hazards in the area prone to landslides and earthquakes.

In addition, the state government is giving impetus to water harvesting in Darjeeling.

"We are preparing a master plan. We will eke out a plan where the municipality gives concessions to those who practise water harvesting," said Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress supremo.

She also announced that a biotechnology park would be set up in Kalimpong.

"We will set up skill development parks in every block," she added.
