Gaza toll 330 as Israel escalates operation

Gaza/Jerusalem, Jul 19 (IANS): At least 330 Palestinians, the vast majority of them civilians, have died and 2,400 others have been wounded since Israel launched a major military offensive in the Gaza Strip 12 days ago, medical sources said.

The number of people killed has risen sharply since the Israeli army escalated its "Operation Protective Edge," campaign of massive air raids and naval barrages intended to stop rocket attacks from Gaza, by launching a ground invasion Thursday night, Efe news agency reported citing the sources.

More than 70 Palestinians died in Israeli attacks on towns in the northern and southern part of the coastal enclave during the initial 24 hours of the ground offensive, the Israeli military's first invasion of Gaza - controlled by the Palestinian militant group Hamas - in five years.

Bombing was particularly intense in the towns of Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun, where an artillery shell fired by Israeli forces killed a family of eight, including four minors.

Three members of another family died in a bombardment Friday night in the southern part of Gaza, which has also been pounded by land, sea and air.

In the southern town of Khan Younis, four people were killed and five others were wounded Friday night, while 10 others died in the Israeli military's bombing of the town of Rafah, near the border with Egypt.

Nearly 80 of the fatalities have been children, who account for nearly half of Gaza's population, and countless other minors must cope with the trauma, fear and sleepless nights that 12 days of constant bombardment has produced.

Israeli artillery units are bombing the coastal enclave from combat positions established on Gaza's side of the border.

At nightfall, Israeli planes fire dozens of flares that light up the sky and illuminate neighbourhoods to facilitate ground operations, while combat aircraft and warships launch missiles at their targets.

According to a report from Jerusalem, an Israeli civilian was killed Saturday in a rocket attack on southern Israel.

A 32-year-old man died from rocket shrapnel, Israeli national medical emergency services Director General Eli Bin told Xinhua Saturday.

Three others were wounded, including a four-month-old girl who is in critical condition and a five-year-old boy, the official added.

The three were evacuated to a hospital in the southern Israeli city of Be'er Sheva. Dozens of rockets were fired at southern Israel throughout Saturday.

This is the second Israeli civilian killed since Israel started Operation Protective Edge on Gaza 12 days ago. An Israeli volunteer died of mortar fire at a border crossing near the northern Gaza Strip border on Tuesday.

The latest crisis erupted last month, when Israel began a massive search for three Jewish seminary students who went missing June 12 in the occupied West Bank and were found murdered 18 days later.

Israel blamed the abductions on Hamas, which has said it has no information concerning the kidnap-murders, and arrested 500 people, most of them linked to the group.

Tensions flared after a Palestinian teenager was abducted in Jerusalem before dawn on July 2 and found burned to death hours later in a suspected revenge killing for the murders of the three Israeli students.

Israel brought an end to its 38-year occupation of Gaza in 2005 by withdrawing its forces and pulling out its settlers, although Palestinians still resent Israel's crippling economic blockade of the coastal enclave.

The common representation of Israel’s birth is that the UN created Israel on May 14, 1948, that the world was in favor of this move, and that the US governmental establishment supported it. All these assumptions are demonstrably incorrect.

In reality, while the UN General Assembly recommended the creation of a Jewish state in part of Palestine, that recommendation was non-binding and never implemented by the Security Council.

Second, the General Assembly passed that recommendation only after Israel proponents threatened and bribed numerous countries in order to gain a required two-thirds of votes.

    Alison Weir
Alison Weir is utive director of If Americans Knew and president of the Council for the National Interest. See the “History of US-Israel Relations” for detailed citations for the above information. Additional references can be found in “How Palestine Became Israel.”
Third, the US administration supported the recommendation out of domestic electoral considerations, and took this position over the strenuous objections of the State Department, the CIA, and the Pentagon.

The passage of the General Assembly recommendation sparked increased violence in the region. Over the following months the armed wing of the pro-Israel movement, which had long been preparing for war, perpetrated a series of massacres and expulsions throughout Palestine, implementing a plan to clear the way for a majority-Jewish state.

It was this armed aggression, and the ethnic cleansing of at least three-quarters of a million indigenous Palestinians, that created the Jewish state on land that had been 95 percent non-Jewish prior to Zionist immigration and that even after years of immigration remained 70 percent non-Jewish. And despite the shallow patina of legality its partisans extracted from the General Assembly, Israel was born over the opposition of American experts and of governments around the world, who opposed it on both pragmatic and moral grounds.
    Stop killing innocent people.

    Dear Bulsam, Mangalore

You wrote UN created Israel on May 14, 1948. But the holy book Bible says Christ born in Israel more than 2000 years back and most of the Middle East countries are there in this book.

When Israel attacks and kills for their protection you feel bad, but in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Nigeria etc. etc. Christians, Hindus and all other religion peoples harassed and killed by your brethren for nothing, you are not telling anything why?

This culture of the powerful escaping any judgment has been predominant in the Middle East region for many years, and naturally Israel has been its prime beneficiary. Zionist Jews were comfortable with the illusion that the policy of genocide would eradicate Palestinians’ hopes of freedom and scare Arabs off from pursuing any change in the status quo. The Zionists believed that by playing the role of watchdog in the region, they would be allowed forever to continue their genocidal policy, with the West’s financial and political support, in perpetuity.
The most horrible thing in this dark period was not only the way in which the Western states granted carte blanche to the Zionists to continue this genocidal policy, but the silence of the public internationally and here I refer in particular to left wing parties, humanitarian bodies and human rights organizations etc.
This does not mean that there were not brave voices that did much to break the silence about the Zionist crimes.
But the reality is that the Public opinion moved slowly in realizing the fascist reality of Israel, compared for instance to its relatively swift reaction towards the apartheid regime of South Africa.
I expected and naturally hoped that there would come a time when public opinion would be fed up of the Zionist drama and fairy tales, but it was difficult to anticipate when this change would come about.
Nevertheless, one of the best things about the modern age is that Palestinians have begun to learn how to use the culture of law to sue Israel. Pursuing Israel leaders in several courts in several nations is a great achievement for both the international solidarity movement and, naturally, for the cause of Palestine. This conveys a solid message that the time of Zionist Jews playing the role of invincible earthly Gods has gone forever. It will also bring a great message of hope to Palestinians that Zionist war lords can no longer escape justice.
God is great & he knows the best!

I condemn the religion based comments made against palestine.
What will happen if you build a refuge to prosecute people in a place where other people already lived. innocents are innocents irrespective of any religion. It was US hand in gloves which created Israel. US - big brother played big blunder in the name of peace. while the two decades of peace talk were ongoing US/UN not bothered to put a cease fire when Israel was encroaching all these time. where as in Pakistan and indias case big brother put cease fire all of a sudden. Other wise india could have took back Pakistan encroachment fully. Big bro making big blunders to safeguard its interest. US created Alqaeda against Russia, Raised Saddam against Iran and then invaded both after their mission complete. US playing games with all as in the case of ind and pak too. Without US courtesy Pak will be like NEPAL for ind. but see today with support of US pak is in a position of attacking india.Big bro is playing with all. I have deep condolence towards palestenians as they are paying for nothing. they are driven out of their land and homes.
don't comment if you don't know ground reality and commit sin.
What will be situation if Bangladeshis who are already inside india, encroach part of india and kill our people(remember Israel encroached 70% of Palestine place ) Israel paid heavily to UN for their settlement.
no doubt big bro is a big Ba!st#rd.
one thing US and Israel should remember there is one supreme who created everything and closely watching all including you. Believe it or not Israel will not spare US also one day. jai hind

Israel violated 65 UN resolutions, Violated Geneva Convention over and over again, used chemical weapons on civilians, destroyed 500 villages, killed 6000 in 10 years, forced natives of a land to become refugees in their own land, enforced a blockage on those refugees and attached anyone who came to provide humanitarian aid to them where as the Palestinians thrown out of their own home, lost children to Israeli bullets, Schools and hospitals even refugee camps are bombed regularly living in subhuman conditions without proper food, electricity, water, shelter and anyone who comes to provide basic necessities of life is stopped by Israeli blockade. BBC news:Iraqi Christians are fleeing Mosul after Islamist militants threatened to kill them unless they converted to Islam or paid a "protection tax".
A statement issued by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) was read out at the city's mosques.
It called on Christians to comply by midday on Saturday or face death if they did not leave the northern city.
Isis has control of large parts of Syria and Iraq and said last month it was creating an Islamic caliphate.
The ultimatum cited a historic contract known as "dhimma," under which non-Muslims in Islamic societies who refuse to convert are offered protection if they pay a fee, called a "jizya".
"We offer them three choices: Islam the dhimma contract - involving payment of jizya if they refuse this they will have nothing but the sword," the Isis statement said.

Isis issued a similar ultimatum in the Syrian city of Raqqa in February, calling on Christians to pay about half an ounce (14g) of pure gold in exchange for their safety.

I saw other day these hamas leaders covering their faces and giving warnings to Israel from their hide out. By covering faces shows how much fear they have about Israel They worry that in case Israel come to know their faces it might sketch for their target. British occupied India, People fought against British to get our motherland back from British is an act of patriotism and if Palestinians are fighting to get their motherland from Israel (Israel was not existed before 1948, they are the new comers and occupied Palestine) are terrorists? Height of Double standards! Only heartless people can justify the killings of Children (Children are children- whichever community, religion, race, race they belong)
