"Suffering from various old age ailments, he was admitted in Gobinda Ballav Pant Medical College and hospital July 20 and breathed his last there Monday night," a CPI-M spokesman told reporters.

Chanda's body was brought to the party office Monday night itself to allow people to pay their last respects.

The last rites were performed at Battala mass cremation ground here Tuesday.

Former chairman of CPI-M Tripura unit's control commission, Chanda, a bachelor, also participated in India's freedom struggle and was imprisoned for many years.

He became a member of the undivided communist party in 1960 and joined the CPI-M in 1964 after its division.
