Rats blamed for rail accident in France

Paris, July 29 (IANS): Rats have been blamed for a train accident in France that left 40 people injured earlier this month, media reports said Tuesday.

Rats nibbling at signalling cables, which led to it staying green when it should have been red, led to a crash between two passenger trains, the Local reported citing findings of France’s state-owned rail company SNCF.

The site where rodents chewed through the cable was undergoing some work at the time of the crash, France Info reported. The signal had last been inspected in June 2013, it added.

France’s rail system has come under fire in recent months after a deadly derailment in the Paris suburbs last year that killed seven people. A report released on the anniversary of the disaster claimed the crash was just a question of time, given the poor state of the tracks.
