Don't waste time on Internet, smartphones, Pope Francis urges young people

Rome, Aug 6 (Agencies) : Pope Francis on Tuesday urged 50,000 German altar servers not to waste time on the Internet, smartphones and television, but to spend their time on more productive activities.

"Maybe many young people waste too many hours on futile things," the pope said in a short speech to the altar servers - young people who help the priest during religious services - who had come to Rome on a pilgrimage.

"Our life is made up of time, and time is a gift from God, so it is important that it be used in good and fruitful actions."

Activities cited by Francis as futile were: "chatting on the Internet or with smartphones, watching TV soap operas, and (using) the products of technological progress, which should simplify and improve the quality of life, but distract attention away from what is really important."

The 77-year-old pope has Twitter accounts in several languages. They were first used by his predecessor Benedict in 2011, and his English language account has 4.3 million followers.

He has described the Internet as a "gift from God", but also cautioned that high-speed world of digital social media needed calm, reflection and tenderness if it was to be "a network not of wires but of people".

Digital devices are all the rage among young people today, across all ages. Tablets top the youngest student’s wish lists, pre-teens crave smart phones, and high school students would love to have both plus a laptop computer! MP3 players and other electronic devices are also widely used by many of today’s students. Are digital devices plugging our children into experiences that actually fuel their creativity and make them consider the world beyond their neighborhood or are they robbing our children of some of the joys of childhood? A rewarding childhood should include experiences like climbing trees, playing tag, selling lemonade and daydreaming – are these still quintessential experiences for many of today’s youth or are they too glued to their small screens to partake in these types of activities?
Want to know where your child is at all times? Give them a smart phone. You can call or text your child to confirm their whereabouts. Many smart phones also contain GPS tracking that can be activated to specify the phone’s exact location. The reality is, a computer has become necessary to complete many homework assignments.  Students are required to research a topic, and sometimes the most current and accurate data is found online. The Information Age is a glorious gift to the curious child in many ways. Learn how to knit -  Identify the plants growing in the backyard – Research the family tree – Visit the depths of the ocean or the peak of the world’s tallest mountain without leaving the couch! Your child’s fondness for the search field may lead to real-life adventures later on. While this argument can go both ways (for example, the ‘heads down’ nature of kids walking around staring at their cell phones has a rather unsocial aspect to it), there is surely a strong element of socialization to many of the apps that young people use, such as Facebook and other social networking tools. Another possible upside to the social nature of some applications is the potential for social learning in the instructional settings.
Children must be computer literate and having a high command of it in a globalised world. I agree with Pope Francis „He has described the Internet as a "gift from God", but also cautioned that high-speed world of digital social media needed calm, reflection and tenderness if it was to be "a network not of wires but of people".

    Best regards

In Iraq where millions of christians are driven out of their homes and asked to convert or die, the so called shepherds clad in white gold and crimson look the other way and let the sheep die . Of course they need to say something to make their presence felt by issuing some statements.

What you want the shepherds should do you want to say, indirectly?
Do those shepherds have armies to fight?

Except just prayers, nothing else there is.. These are the test of times.
Fighting might win humans for a while, but never will win hearts.

Ultimately where we stand before the Supreme, to give accounts what we did good, not what we gained.

My dear jayaram from kinnigoli.... first of all learn what is the meaning of conversion then comment. by the way Roman catholic christians do not indulge in conversion as we are not in a hurry to increase our numbers. we never invite other religion people to ATTEND OUR MASSES OR RETREAT. i do not know nowadays who put this conversion thing in you as well as some other people same like your minds. If non christians faith is strong in their respective religion nobody on earth can force them.

    Dear Jayaram,
As a catholic I strongly believe in inner cleanliness of heart and mind.
Rightly the Pope said, Catholic church does not want quantity of Catholics but Quality Catholics.
As Jesus said, those who say Lord Lord will not enter heaven but those who do the will of God, which is "Love thy God" and "Love thy Neighbour as Thyself".
All know there so many Out Standing Catholics who do just the lip service to be counted as Catholics, but not outstanding Catholics.
As a Catholic myself I have a lot of struggle and stress to live as per God's commandment, which is absolutely very difficult during current times in this nasty, titilating and morally corrupt world.
But striving one step at a time will work wonders.

When the abuse of the Technology has been already found abused by our younger generation, even children from 5 years to 18years, the message has come as a strong warning from the world revered Pope admired by Catholics, a majority population of the world.

We hope the institutions managed by the Bishops etc effectively spread this message so that the younger generation will use for the betterment of the society and end up in renunciation the abuse of this god given wonderful gift of Internet & smart phones.

Timely and right message from Pope. I fully endorse it, but dont know how many will follow it.
Good that it was told by Pope. If the same comes from any Indian saint or Baba Ramdev, our commentators would have just rejected it.

A relevant and timely message from the Pope.
Using a smartphone definitely does not necessarily make you smart. Now these have invaded everywhere , even into the toilets. And what to ask of these young folks nowadays...?
Asked why they took it even into the toilets one replied..
'Cause it brings the best out of me...!
As if he was loaded with the best...!!
