Mangalore, Aug 27: The surgery that not only the parents of a three-year-old girl but the entire medical fraternity of the city were waiting for is over, and successfully so. The city's first cochlear implant programme was conducted by the department of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery, Kasturba Medical college on Saturday August 26.
A team of doctors including Prof Mohan Kameshwaran, Prof Kishore Chandra Prasad, Dr Jayashree Bhat and others performed the path-breaking surgery on a three-year-old girl who was born deaf.
A programme organised to mark the occasion was inaugurated by Mangalore MLA N Yogish Bhat. MAHE pro-chancellor Prof H S Ballal presided. The guests of honour were MAHE vice-chancellor Prof Rajashekaran Warrier, KMC dean Prof C V Raghuveer, KMC hospital chief operating officer Dr Sunil Deshpande and Manipal based COAHS dean Prof Rajashekar.
Lauding the efforts of the doctors in successfully conducting the surgery, Yogish Bhat congratulated the MAHE team on bringing the technology to the city.
