PM justifies WTO stand

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday justified India's tough stand at the World Trade Organisation negotiations saying the government took the decision to protect the poor of the country.

“What should we do? Should we choose in favour of our farmers or opt for getting good exposure in international media? We have chosen for the interest of the poor people in the country,” Modi said in his address at the Bharatiya Janata Party National Party Council meeting here.

Last week, India decided not to ratify WTO's Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA), pushed by the developed world, without any movement in finding a permanent solution to its public food stock-holding issue for food security purposes.
