Sydney, Aug 30: The Mangalorean community of Sydney, had the rare occasion of hosting Bishop Aloysius P D'Souza of Mangalore, while on his short trip to Sydney.

The bishop celebrated Mass on Sunday, August 20 in the parish of Our Lady of Dolours, Chatswood, which was followed by a luncheon in the Harrington Hall. 

A large number of the Mangalorean community members attended it in spite of the short notice. Martin Lobo, in his welcome address, introduced the bishop and lauded him on his accomplishments during his term.  Stanley D'Cruz then briefly touched on the Sydney Catholic scene and gave a short profile of the Mangaloreans in Sydney. 

Bishop D'Souza then addressed the gathering, particularly informing the need for strong faith and for remaining united within the family.  He then explained the salient features of some of his existing pastoral projects and new community initiatives. 

Eightyeight-year-old Walter D'Souza, the oldest Mangalorean present on the occasion, presented the Bishop a gift and fund- raising was done for the occasion. George Pinto proposed a vote of thanks.  Ryan Sequeira compered the function.

Bishop D'Souza is on a short visit to Australia.  He had been invited to attend the centenary celebrations of the Townsville St Vincent de Paul Society held in Townsville from August 24 to 26.  He took this opportunity to briefly visit Sydney and met with the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, as well as officials of Caritas, Australia.
