Loyal dog starves but refuses to leave boy's grave for a fortnight

CHENNAI, Aug 26 (TOI): From a distance, the dog was a blur next to a freshly dug grave, its whimpers lost in the noise of vehicles speeding past. For more than a fortnight the animal would not leave the spot where the 18-year-old boy who had adopted him had been buried after he died in a road accident. The brown mongrel went without food, braved sun and rain, but refused to move in an extraordinary display of loyalty.

Blue Cross of India volunteers spotted the dog sitting near the grave in the open burial ground near Avadi Bridge, Blue Cross of India general manager Dawn Williams said. "When we attempted to rescue the dog, it stubbornly resisted and refused to budge," Williams said. "It just scratched the grave and whined."

The volunteers then spoke to people who lived nearby. "We met a local resident who said the dog belonged to Bhaskar. He died after being hit by a speeding vehicle on August 2. Bhaskar's mother, Sundhari, 50, is a construction worker who lived in a shed near the building site," Williams said.

When the team went to Sundhari's house she said the dog, Tommy, had been her son's pet for five years. After his death, the animal had disappeared. She accompanied the team to the grave. The emaciated dog staggered towards Sundhari and crouched near her feet.

"Sundhari clasped the dog, held its neck to her face and cried," Blue Cross volunteer Mukund J said.

Sundhari, a widow, said life had become meaningless after the death of her only son. But the pet that had remained steadfast to her son, even after his death, could be a reason to live, she said. "She took Tommy with her and returned home, Mukund said.

When TOI tried to contact Sundhari, residents said she had gone back to her native place in Tiruvannamalai and had taken the dog with her.

"Dogs, like humans, can love, suffer, and grieve," PeTA India CEO Poorva Joshipura said. "We hope everyone who is moved by the story of this faithful companion will care for dogs by adopting a stray or volunteering at an animal shelter."

True, Dogs are really loyal friends of humans only when you Show love towards them. This reminds me of a incident some years back happened to us.As we were in Holidays in India with children some years back. There was a very good pet at home.my children were playing and feeding him and so showing affection towards the dog ,with the time dog got fetter ,children got thinner(doesnt matter)and we had to leave back.Dog came up with us till we sat in the taxi.when we reached back our relatives Told us that the dog was waiting at the spot where we left for almost four days without taking Food and yawling and running the road along taxi left.He was going everyday up and down and crying it seems.he took Long time to be normal.by our next visit he recognized us immediately ,showed his affection.Great.Later as he died we were very sad.(was very old.)

Dear RSRB... I appreciate your concern for the suffering of cattles.....Have you ever, ever read -In Nepal, the only hindu country is sacrificing thousands and thousands of cows on some festivals...See the U-tube to know how the cows are slaughtered in one SHOT of the sword....I feel pity for the animals where ever they are sacrificed.

You are blaming others for supporting the torture of cows. But I feel that you too are supporting Feku Modi for his efficiency / Impotency when 700 - 800 hindu brothers / sisters were killed in Gujrat riots during his rule. Not only that hundreds of our Hindu sisters were publicly gang raped in Gujrat because of our great Modi. DONT' YOU HAVE ANY CONCERN / COMPASSION FOR OUR HINDU BROTHERS AND SISTERS who suffered in Gujrat for none of their faults.
I am not writing for win or defeat but we must defeat FEKUGIRI and shedding of crocodile tears

    Animal Lover.

    Are you a pure vegetarian?

Please do not generalize things and the nature of different people.

Humans are the best creation of God but some people do not realize that and lead an animalistic and devilish life style and destroy the moral and human ethics to satisfy their own ego.

Love you all guys, I m so happy that we have started realising our worth, we are the worst creation of God . Animals and nature are true and give their selfless love to us, but we have destroyed it, killed it and we don't even regret it. Im ashamed to be a human.

God has created hundreds of animals/birds....Out of all these Humans are most cruel, deadly and poisenous animal.

Animals never killing for fun.It will never rape for their lust. But humans are doing all. After seeing atrocity of Humans God may be regretting for his creation.

It proves that the animals are move loyal than humans. The article touched my soul. As a dog lover and owner, I could feel the eternal pain of the dog in this article for its owners. Just for taking care of it and keeping in equals, it did not agree to move away from its master's graveside. Kudos to this dog and hope Sundari shall take care good care of it.
