Myanmar lifts curfew in western state capital

Nai Pyi Taw, Sep 11 (IANS): Myanmar Thursday lifted a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed in the capital of Rakhine state.

The curfew had been imposed on Sittway city since June 2012 following the outbreak of a sectarian riot, Xinhua reported.

The curfew was extended in March this year when renewed riots occurred targeting the facilities of international aid groups.

The riots in March were triggered by the taking down of a Buddhist flag hoisted at the office of an international organisation by a female project coordinator of an aid group.

According to officials, the curfew has affected the tourism industry and border trade activities.

Over a dozen Sittway-based offices of 18 aid groups, including UN agencies, were attacked and destroyed by hundreds of unidentified local ethnic Rakhine demonstrators.
