Last-gasp goal help Bayern beat Man City


Paris, Sep 18 (IANS): Jerome Boateng's last-gasp goal helped Germany's Bayern Munich beat England's Manchester City 1-0 and Gerard Pique's goal from a Lionel Messi free-kick helped Spain's Barcelona edge Cyprus' APOEL by an identical margin in the UEFA Champions League football.

Bayern's match-winning goal came in the 90th minute Wednesday. The goal brought Bayern coach Pep Guardiola racing down the touchline to celebrate with the goal scorer Boateng, reports Xinhua.

Barca's Messi picked out Gerard Pique with a free kick and the defender headed in the hosts' solitary goal of the match in the 28th minute.

In the other Group E game, Italy's Roma defeated Russia's CSKA Moscow comfortably 5-1 at home.

In the group's other match, France's Paris Saint-Germain settled for a 1-1 draw against Dutch side Ajax.

In Group G, England's Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Schalke 04. Cesc Fabregas scored for Chelsea in the 11th minute. Maribor and Sporting Lisbon also settled for a 1-1 draw.

In Group H, Portugal's FC Porto thrashed Bate Borisov 6-0. Spain's Athletic Bilbao was held 0-0 at home by Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk.
